Oh, this must be why there were no working class DJs at all ever before the existance of Napter, SLSK etc...

well, quite

it all boils down to whether or not you want to support a scene IMO

Exactly what i do
just go to their myspace - if the tracks not there then use your initiative
you're still supporting illegal downloads by 'dipping your toe in just to test'

Yeah, that's the thing.
I download a lot of tracks illegally, but I also spend a lot of money on records, mp3s, shows, etc. It comes down to whether or not your genuinely want to support the artists. If you do, then IMO it's OK to "steal" as long as you're contributing as much as you can. A lot of the time the choice is not between buying or stealing but between stealing or not having at all.
Everyone should do what they can to support the artists. So I would be more critical of a person who d/l's illegally even though they can afford everything they d/l.

bit harsh!

even the working class crew in the uk, back in the 90s, could afford to buy a 12" for about the cost of an hour's work. it was never all that expensive for us. but it is for a lot of countries out there.

i'm with red one - keep doing what you can do to support :D

i meant the people that goes out and wax 100 quid on chang of a weekend, then download all their music for free - not parts of the world where wages are 1/3 (or less) of what they are here :)

if music is your sole means to make money, you should consider finding some other means to make money, because music and art are not very good for this unless you're trying to be some top40 lame like kanye west.

music downloading isn't going to stop. period. regardless of what i or anyone else here thinks about the legitimacy of downloading and/or supporting a scene.. there are probably more people out there who don't care about the scenes or the artists. just go on soulseek and have a look at how many users are on there to see for yourself. what are you going to do, arrest them all? are you going to lock down the internet? that would be utterly retarded and ridiculous.

i support free and donation music.

additionally, i can assure you that producers who are selling their music did not all pay for the software they are using to create it. not saying that everyone is using pirated software, but i wonder how many are and still think they can sell their tunes..

To get itunes files to mp3: You can burn it on a cd and then rip it.
nonono that would mean RE ENCODING the file, thus losing even more data and making it sound even worse. IMO if you bought it from itunes then you've paid for it and supported the artist and the label, so go ahead if u want better quality as itunes doesn't offer non-drm stuff.

just a slightly different perspective to ponder: How would you feel if most of this dubstep was made with cracked software?

i have little opinion on this matter (purely out of laziness) but it could raise some points. FYI i own ma software...have done for a long long time ;-)

yeah, that's pretty much what i just said two posts back. i sincerely doubt everyone who is selling their music has paid for all their software. even if they didn't buy their and they make good tunes.. ok well whatever, just don't talk about it i guess..

but if you are bitching about downloading music and you have even once piece of pirated/cracked software, you really need to shut the hell up.

sorry to cut away the rest of what you said but this just...mental

i haven't purchased vinyl in like, 4 years, sold my shitty tables almost as long ago

seriously, cd's for life..failing that, serato or whatever

i haven't played a released tune after it came out in so bloody long, and i don't care to
i'd much rather play all my own shit anyways and in canada cutting dubs is RETARRDRDREREDLY expensive, so fuck that too :D

but to say it's lame to be a dj without vinyl...well, that's just lame :D
i'd be no where in that case
wouldn't have any records out, wouldn't be dj'ing...wouldn't be doing shit!

everyone has a preference, but i don't think it's fair to say it's lame, even though we are entitled to our opinions

true say. i've been djing with *ONLY* traktor... not even final scratch, just a mouse.. it's difficult but there's not reason why this isn't just as good as spinning with records. to say there's more or less skills involved is patently absurd. not that my djing is phenominal, but i don't evne have a pre-mix system (i can't listen to the mix before it drops live) and i do a good enough job to have people tell me they enjoy my sets when i do play out.

music is music, regardless of the medium.

for the record (haha pun), i still own vinyl because i like how it sounds, not because of any "cool" factor. and at the cost of it, i sure as hell won't be carrying it around with me.

btw bombaman, i heard your set @ lava in chicago when you were here and it was killer. good job!

LOL I wasn't even about to touch that post. What is lame is the vinyl/dubplate vs everything else debate. Pretty much everyone has made there case on here at least once. Let's just say fuck it and do what we do eh?

I can't even be arsed to lug about CDs, that's why I went for the Cortex HDC3000 after trying in a shop, it's just perfect and better than some gear that's like 800 quid, stability wise.
