I buy everything with one thing in mind: what would this sound like on a nice PA / Rig / my 400 watt speakers? This sorts out my decisions mostly, although I also try to think as a DJ and not if I 'like it', this may sound like a contradiction but chosing tunes is a proper art. I make lists and carefully document those I like a bit, definite buys, growers and those which I have already bought - don't wanna be getting the same tune twice!

More than not the production speaks for itself, but variety is also essential, no one style, for example a selection of the best of the techno orientated bits but also some of the mid-range filth. When you turn up to a dance with a bag brimming with styles and a knowledge of how to mix all of them you can't lose!

Moreover, there is nothing worse than not buying something and wishing you had. I still remember tunes that I let get away, some over 5 years ago! I swear I could go on - tune selection is an art - when you spend as much on vinyl as I do (and I'm sure alot of people do on this forum) you have to be methodical and meticulous.

This is exactly me, just have to work more on the mixing part

I find what else makes a difference, with internet buying anyway, listen to that tune on a few different sites. Something that sounds great on SOTU can sound rubbish on Chemical or Redeye, or vice versa.

yeah i just try and be really picky cos im on a budget. i try and listen to the tunes a couple times each, these days if it doesnt make me immediately move or gasp at the drop i don't get it. i love all the songs i buy now... altho my copy of the vex'd remix of 'fallen' skips and i only realised when i got home

i didnt get 'squeeze my lime' by darkstar tho and regret that. but these days i love what i buy, there's so many well produced tracks coming out right now it's hard to buy a shit one lol. feel more like i'm spoilt for choice.

also i feel i should add.... all of these have had very little play, so a in virtual mint condition.

My problem is that I buy tunes that dont necessarily fit together that well. In the same bag i'll have Martyn, Distance and SP:MC so i dont have a lot of one style (although it is all dubstep!).

And re what everyone has been saying about not liking tunes they've bought, its happened to me but then a year down the line i randomly pick a tune out of my bag and be like "damn this is good! Why didnt i like it before?"...

You've got to listen to your biology. Experiencing jawlock or becoming incapable of moving your arms are good indicators of a record worth buying. In the dubstep scene you'll do well only buying those tunes because there are a lot.

That used to happen to me fairly often when I played DnB.
I'm at the point now where I look for value.
Example.....
That latest RevolveR release or the latest Red Volume (W/ Transient & Must) are absolute must haves. The RevolveR plate is 3/3 and the Red Volume release has 2/3 ridiculously good tunes. I find myself passing on plates with only 1 side I'm digging. If the 1 side is really banging sometimes I just can't pass but as a general rule these days I look for value in a plate. I also pay attention to whether or not certain labels are good with digital releases. If they are I'll often pass on a plate with 1 good side and just scoop the digital release.

There's always tunes that sound indispensable from internet soundclips and then I get them at home, play them once and go 'ehhhh'

i.e. Skream + Cluekid: Sandsnake (although that was more because I heard it at loud volume while pissed at a rave) / TRG RMX of that Tayo tune... boring in my bedroom

A-FUCKIN-MEN my friend, finally some one who has the same problem as me, i always buy the wrong records bro, can't explain why, i have some right ones, but alot i rarely look at!

it's easy.. don't buy records when high

I sometimes buy tunes 'for a laugh', for example, if I hear a drop that's so large it's stupid, and then a second drop that's daft too. I know at the time I buy it that the tune's not really any good, but anyway...

Mind you, I have bought some tunes for a laugh, and then gone on to really like them. My interest in bassline started as a bit of a joke, but I now really quite like the genre.
