I don't think that you can ever do good deeds too often, in fact I'd say that most of us probably don't do anywhere near enough good deeds.

And if you've got mates who are constantly needing favours, I dunno...It's kind of swings and roundabouts with my mates, they lend me money if I'm skint, they support me and give me advice if (morelike when) I need it, and that is reciprocated.

But aquaintances who are always on the blag, well that's a different story entirely.

this!! its like when my mates are always cadging cigarettes off me, it can get a bit long after a while but i know they'll always set me up with a few when i've run out and they've got some left, crap example i guess but you know what i mean.

Last week I told my neighbour that she had left her car lights on, but by this time it was too late and her battery was flat... is it still a good dead even though it was too late?

I gave my seat to a preggers woman on the train the other day, and I bought some Nik Naks on the way into work this morning and was positively drooling over eating them, then decided to give them to someone else at lunch as they were starving. not sure if that counts but I really fucking wanted them.

I gave cider to a tramp and sat and drank with him. Not sure if it's technically a 'good deed', but he said he was lonely so having a chat with him was good.

Possibly true mate! They are leaving work tomorrow though so it was like a farewell present/deed/thing. I'm justifying it.

I could get into the discussion of whether there is such a thing as pure altruism...

I generally don't do big gestures, it's just living the right way to me. Unfortunately so many people are so inherently selfish that small gestures like opening a door for an woman with a wheelchair, giving up your seat on a bus to an old biddy seems like more of a good deed than they should.

offcourse, the fact that you do something good only to feel better about yourself gets reffered to as a selfcentric gesture because the good feeling about yourself/good karma/whatever is the purpose in itself.

but i don't believe in karma, or stuff like the good things you do eventually return to you.
i recently started to think the opposite, the good you wish to someone is your luck your wishing away.
and therefor i believe there is such thing as pure altruism

but who determines that? the individual performing the act or the people watching the act and translating the motive based on what they would or would not do in the same situation?

There are lots of people who are better than I. I can admit that.

I think that motives are unimportant. Who cares your reasoning when you're being a good, caring human being?
