He puts out some substandard stuff, but he's a fucking musical genius without a doubt. Can't say I was that into all his Analord stuff that dropped last year - reckon it was just a load of stuff that he'd had sitting around for time. But dig through his back catalogue and there are tonnes of treasures in there: SAW 1 & 2, On, 54 Cymru Beats, Men 1, Windowlicker, Digeridoo, the Analog Bubblebath stuff, his remixes for Curve and Baby Ford... just for starters.

come to daddy was one of those songs that really started me searching out harder, more jungle type music.

my girlfriend can't stop listening to that tune after i played it to her about a year ago. i think analord is somethin of a return to form, a lot of the stuff on druqs left me cold. i definately rate his older stuff over the newer stuff though, polygon window is a classic.

His older stuff is the shizzle. The Caustic Window comp and hangable autoblub 12s. All his new stuff is just jizm.

Do agree with the quality control ish with afx, as he does seem to just pump out a lot of similar sounding trax at the moment, which is a shame, as he did used to be more innovative than that.

When he's good, he's very very VERY good, when he's bad, he's a bit pretentious, but sometimes I think that's deliberate!

Still haven't forgotten when he came to The Junction about 9 yrs back... completely empty stage for the first half, with him hiding behind what appeared to be a little curved fronted booth, which he would jump out from behind now and then to shake random hands, then half way through the show, a giant green teddy bear with his face wanders onto the stage and starts dancing!

DOH!!!
:T:

And as for the structure vs chaos ish, well it's possible to have both in same track - try it, it's fun!

It's also fun to have catchy melodies/hooks over twisted sounds and/or beats...Public Enemy are past masters of this (to pick at random).

Genius. When the moment is right, he can kill it with a combo or harmony, strange ridim and technical skills.

I really like Drukqs, Richard D. James, Windowlicker and of course, Analord series. But all his early ambient is quite... boring. It's IDM so don't expect to get the music on the first attempt. Boards of Canada, LFO, Autechre are great as well.

VENTOLIN.
that's the dbl ep to check.
i might have track 1 played at my funeral.
fave track is the one with the "click, beep" interruption in it.

come to daddy has Flim on it, which is lovely, amongst other treats.
Funny Little Man as well.

ppl who think richard james is pretentious/taking-the-piss and/or very-experimental are not listening to as much as reading about him. such paranoia.

he makes poppy progressive techno.
it is mostly very cogent and tastefully put together.
often it's sentimentally poignant.
sometimes it's imbued with playful humour.
maybe 2 or 3 tracks could be described as noise. b-side of the bug remix is one.
not too keen on Druqks, lots of that sounds like previously unreleased off-cuts or sth.
Analord is like old men and their trad jazz roots fetishes.
the original afx stuff, analogue bubblebath etc, is a bit more explorative, and dirtier to boot.

and let's not forget On, which is great and would probably mix nicely with dubstep. make sure you listen to that if you never have.

when listening to his stuff done after "i care..." (esp. richard d james album) i recommend that you focus,
paying close attention and following the interplay of those rhythmic details, as well as the larger scale melodic movement.
it aint noise by a long shot.
it's damn tight.
it's bloody good music, for the most part, and in some quite "normal" ways too.

in a similar vein to RDJ's more complex tunes, i also really like Bogdan Raczinski's Samurai Math Beats.
check it if u like D&B with personality. wonderful album.

what is jizm?
I thought some of the analords tracks were pretty wicked.
a fine example of machine analogue. . .
like analord 10 for instance, fenixfunk_5 and xmd5a

come on besides the ambient works (and i'm sorry, they're amazing + all the later things like come to daddy, things like bucephalus bouncing ball, or druqs)
he's been like the one who took the electronic music production the way that only kratwerk did before - in a certain way-...he is the godfather - to me at least :6:
