and that's when they will have an opinion/reaction born of experience.TEQH wrote:Yeh there is good bass on some headphones but that's just the tip of the iceberg for dubstep, I think I could respect the opinion of someone who has only heard of dubstep on a laptop or whatever, because deep down I know that when they do end up at a night with a sub rattling their bones they will wake up

sub is vital
This is false. I spun as DJ Jack Pink on October 28th at a local bar. I played primarily dubstep in addition to the bellydance music that the dancers I was spinning for wanted. I live in a small Indiana town and no one in the bar had heard any dubstep before (I played primarily Stenchman, Vex'd, Distance, Ekaros, and Vaccine). I got many compliments after the show asking me what I played and where it was from. Plenty of people found this special and interesting and all I had to use was a Behringer KX1200 P.A. and a set of M-Audio MX5a's.WhiteLight wrote:One of my friend had to manage to play a small set with no Sub at a Halloween party. Was completely let down....
Playing Dubstep without subs sucks, especially if there is newcomers listening: then won't find anything special to Dubstep and won't look more into it.

Poorly placed monitors or lack there of is another rant I could go on about. I don't know how it is in other countries/cities but in my experience I'd say setups are good about 1 out of every 5 places I play.
Some of my favorites are playing on tables 3 feet off the ground, bad monitor situations, and not being able to see the f'ing mixer.

If its a lounge kinda place , or an after hrs kinda vibe ,where people come to relax and chat w/ friends over some drinks...then not having subs isn't a big deal...now if its a club or a massive party ..then sure, you need to have subs and a decent system to play on.....just my 2cents!
I have to agree with this. Yes, a large portion of dubstep relies on sub-bass, but that shouldn't be the make-or-break selling point of the genre. It's about the vibe too, what feelings the music evokes. Choose tracks that are interesting for reasons other than being bass-driven if you haven't got a sub handy - it just seems like common DJing sense.Gargamale wrote:This is false. Yes, a sub is preferred, but people can see the merit in this genre without it, even newcomers.
