are you all tuning your 808 kicks by ear? Im no good at that and cant get my 808 sub in tune.

Yeah, alot of old school Drum & Bass / Jungle uses 808's for subs and low end pretty much due to the fact that synths weren't as common as they are now and 808 were really popular back then. Hip Hop still uses the 808 though, probably because it likes to stick to it roots. Especially a lot of west coast rap.

I don't think 808's really have much use imo due to the fact that a sine wave will do me fine.

i mix it up a bit more now between an 808, a sine wave and klopfgeist on logic depending on how i feel and what kind of bassline i want to do

the thing with 808's is (for me anyway) the transient at the start that gives it the punch on the hit that a normal sine wave doesnt have... love it!

Thats really fucking cool, just used a tail end of an 808 kick, looped 4cycles of it, tuned it and sounds the bomb! its defiantly more 'crunchy' or has more bite than a synthesis sine wave. something to do with the filtered white noise? I looked at it on a spectral analyzer, and there was some very quiet white noise across the whole sample!

Experienced that a week ago when I first messed with it 5 mins of setup and suddenly my bass shattered the walls!!! The extra white noise gives it a fu*#ing nasty character

Yes Yes! this is gonna change some of my tunes 10 fold hopefully.

Yeah, I guess that's the point. Made a tune with an 808 sub and barely wanted to add mids, sounded creamy by itself.

I cant find it now , but i thought i was reading something on here about the sub bass channel should be in mono ?

Any bass Frequency below around 100hz should be in mono because of the wide grooves needed to be cut to vinyl, in stereo the cutting needle/playback needle would Skip grooves.

Rashad Becker talks about this very subject here http://www.monolake.de/interviews/mastering.html. A guy that clearly has ears AND brain. Just search for "mono" if you don't want to read the whole thing.

I always wondered about this, people talking about keeping bass in mono. Well unless you specifically pan your sub/bass then surely it's fine to cut.

Yes well there is a bit of a pitch bend in an 808 innit? Which why some have a problem tuning them. Rather than using an actual 808 sample I like to craft them myself that way I know it's in tune. If laziness is still a problem there is a nice little patch in Predator called tuned 808 or something like that. I usually only use a sine when you just need to fatten up an existing b-line.

BTW someone said your bass shouldn't play a chord. Usually not but I wouldn't rule it out. Maybe not a full chord but a double-stop can sound nice in the lower registers. Artificial Intelligence has some really big tunes with bass chords a few years back.

Foooookin know it. I had up and downstairs neighbors complaining 5 mins after i found it!

If you really can't get it right you can always use Antares Autotune or melodyne.
