You can use Serato without decks... but it kinda defeats the purpose of spending all that money for it when you can get free software that does the same thing. Serato is meant as vinyl emulation using turntables.

No. A good DJ is much much more than just a glorified listener.

Being a good DJ is a bit more than matching a beat and fading it in and out.

Some people take to it naturally and others have to work hard on it. Personally for me it was a bit of a accident. I used to play around at a friends house and then one day I just tried matching the beats and surprised that i was able to do it. I decided to pickup some decks after that and pretty soon I had it locked down. Still it does take years of practise to be a very good DJ, talking about having the whole tune mixed if you want and walking out the door to make a sandwich and come back sort of thing.

back in the old days when i didn't care about being legal it was all 100% profit

Ya can't get no gigs unless you make tunes so it kinda goes hand in hand imo. As far as I am concerned I don't think I'll ever make back a fraction of the money I have put into the whole thing. Doesn't really matter, I enjoy it.

Even with DNB. I have a DNB weekly here and we book big namers for dirt. Except for a handful of the obvious artists, I don't believe anyone is doing this shit for a living. If they are they prolly aren't living too good!

that's refreshing. i think it is a shame that so many people start producing to get dj gigs. no offense to anyone, but that has always seemed to be the reason for some really bad tunes in various genres. not every dj is a good producer, and not every producer is a good dj.

i played various instruments first, then started djing. didn't start producing until years after, specifically because i didn't want to do it just to get dj gigs. i waited til i felt i had something to say/express with my music. i still don't produce that much because it can bore the living shit out of me. i prefer the instant gratification of djing.

I never actually picked up dj-ing. Always seemed kinda fun to do though, should try sometime

It is kind of a fucked up situation Shiv I agree. It didn't used to be like that. Nowaday you have a lot of people making shit tunes to get gigs and good producers trainwrecking everynight to get by. Either way it dilutes the scene imo. But then there is another group that I'd like to think I am in where you are pretty dedicated to both and then running a label and promoting nights, etc. Too much for one person to deal with. Downsizing is a bitch!

Its not the .wavs he said sound cheap and tacky they sound great on Serato.

lol i started as a listener of multi genres
then went to a "live show" of atari teenage riot saw alec on decks and went from there
from hc to hhc to jungl/jump up to dnb and to dubstep etc
plus always nice to mix your own tunes with shit you dig

if your really serious about it just go out and buy some tables. I used to borrow my friends tables but eventually had to go out and buy my own.
