sorry, didn't mean to cause any panic or alarm - we've had a number of the terabyte mybooks mysteriously die at work. they'll still be working, and writable-to, but all the data that was previously on them will have mysteriously disappeared. anything written to them after that will fuck off as well after a couple of connect/ejects.
two of them just died outright and wouldn't show up on either a windows or a linux box.
had a scoot around online (which we really should've done before buying so many of the fuckers) and they're prone to this a fair bit apparently.

I read somewhere, a while back WD make their parts in a new place or something and they're not as reliable as they once were but that might just be on a certain model - and was about a year, year half ago.

I got one of these a while ago:
If you've got any spare HDDs lying about that are big enough, it's the best option at only about £12 i think. Even if you haven't get one anyway and choose the best HDD yourself. It works out about the same price and you can swap drives out when you want (can you do this with the external HDDs? I'm not sure.)

external hard drive, just did me hassle in the end, power connector broke on the back, so ripped the tnuc out and put it in my pc, instead of risking losing all my 140gb+ music, that i spent a lot of time collecting. best bet is to upgrade your hard drive, and back your most important up on a 32gb usb stick or something, externals are a hassle thing to carry about.

Any one recommend a decent Firewire 800 external hd?

Meant to be getting one of these for xmas, need recommendation.
Want around 500gb (under or over), though I'm planning on dumping all my music on it, and playing directly from there. So it needs to be reliable.
Will it be laggy through iTunes or anything? I've only got a USB1, possibly firewire? No idea.
