sorry for being a dunce, how does it work then? do you have to record all the bits you play as audio?

It works with midi, the principle is same as with vstis. Eventually you still need to record the audio though.
There are vst controllers for virus.
http://www.rekonaudio.com/VES_Virus.php for example. Haven't tried them but the idea seems quite cool.
I read the soundonsound's review of virus snow. They said it's only 4 part multitimbral when all the other virusses are 16. Snow might not be worth it's price considering that the virus ti aint that much expensive and old virusses are much cheaper.

You connect the synth with midi and control it like a plug in but then you have to record the audio coming out of the synth. You could do that at the end of the project or when you need more parts from the synth.
These are the limitations that software dont have tho.

I use a Virus TI Polar in my arsenal and love it. It doesn't do everything, but it does a lot... It's nice to run synth parts without taking %%'s off my cpu load

I have a TI, been using it for years now! Love it! Its the centre piece of my studio and personally cant be both a dark and light synth!
Its a fucking monster but with the latest patch update you have 3 usb outs now and too many patches if you like browsing the 3000 odd patches!
Not sure what I'll get next but it'll have to be good to stand tall next to my TI. It takes some getting used to I'll admit that (or it did with me at least!) but now I've mastered it I dont use any VST's as I can make what I want on my TI.
Only other thing is one of the only reasons I bought hardware! To sound different to everyone else! Lets face it not everyone has a TI or for that matter a synth so its a good way to give your sound something you cant download if you know what I mean
