Not really! Sometimes stuff just fit in :)

Yeh I guess so.

I have to admit I actually spend more time finding a sound that fits and requires zero work instead of spending a week trying to make this sound fit etc

I am glad I am lazy sometimes.

Finding sounds that naturally fit together is the optimum way to mix!

Don't see too many eq's on an orchestra...

Steeper filters/eqs ring more though, resonance controls or not - perhaps that's what he was referring to :)

Plus there are amplitude ripple effects around and just above the cutoff which can give a similar impression.

:)

Yeah, exactly. Less chemistry.

Everything has a cost innit, it's always just a question of whether the benefit outweighs the cost. It depends :)

You see people talking about obsessing over having zero frequency content in their snare at 199.9Hz cos you 'have to' high pass it at 200Hz. Meanwhile their snare turns to mush as it smears out in the time domain  That sounds ruuuuuuuuuuuubbish, and is totally audible, especially when trying to correct the tone via eq in mastering :x

Sorry for derailing the thread somewhat :)

dead on. the steeper the filter, the more things build up at the cutoff point, boost or not. resonance isn't just a setting-- it can happen in a number of ways.
