The biennial ranking of Australia's top 5 beef producers and their impact on the industry is highlighted in the September issue of Meat & Livestock Australia's journal feedback.

The top 5 beef producer list is based on the estimated tonnes of beef turned-off by industry participants in calendar year 2003. The ranking not only provides a list of the biggest players in the industry but also an insight into the production practices of these leading producers.

This year's ranking has been expanded from the 2001 list to include an additional five beef producers making up 5 in the industry for 2003.

The combined area operated by the top 5 is almost 58 million hectares and the combined herd size of the group clocks up to over 2.4 million head.

The estimated tonnage of beef produced by the top 5 producers in 2003 represented almost 10% of the total beef produced in Australia at 187,080 tonnes. The top five beef producers in the ranking accounted for 60% of the top 5 production.

Most producers in the ranking included a break down of which markets their cattle would be sold with nearly half (48%) stating export, 37% domestic, 10% store, 4% live export and 1% other.

A strong focus on sustainability featured in the top 5 producers surveyed with 85% being involved in some sort of natural resource management program. Quality assurance programs were also highlighted in the top 5 with nearly half Cattlecare accredited, 24% using the National Livestock Identification System and 20% Meat Standards Australia registered.

Australian Agricultural Company was ranked in the number one position amongst the top 5 beef producers with turn-off amounting to 35,193 tonnes of beef in 2003 an increase of 1,328 tonnes over 2001 production.

For a rundown on the remaining companies in the Top 5 beef producer ranking, the September issue of feedback has the details. Single issues of the magazine can be purchased for $8 by contacting MLA on 1800 675 717.

The top 5 beef producers ranking was compiled by Hassall & Associates Pty Ltd on behalf of MLA's feedback magazine.
