Each to their own, and I don't think this is groundbreaking (just sounds like "Straight" by DJ Mondie) but it's interesting that US pop rap is actually taking influence from UK sounds. "Crank Dat" also had a pretty grime-sounding beat, but not as much as this.

And actually, in the context of US rap, it is pretty groundbreaking, far more than any "underground" rap going on at the moment.

Not a good thing IMO. Too bad some of these new jacks don't stop to remember what Hip-Hop was and where it came from.
"South Bronx, South South Bronx."
Death to country ass Hip-Hop with weak MCs rhyming about BS.

What hip-hop was?
Hip-hop was always dance/pop music, especially very early on (pre-86 or so). It evolves, that's the whole point of it. You don't have to like it, but the whole "keep it real" thing is pretty much the antithesis of hip-hop's roots.

It's understandable, I'm not gonna try and defend Soulja Boy as some kind of pinnacle of modern achievement.

Does Soulja Boy really have aytthing to do with hip hop though? Yeah he's rapping, but this is the shit 13 year olds listen to, its whats rolling on mtv, so I'd just like to call it todays pop.

Grime > Americans pretending to be grimey

To be fair though, I think that soulja boy tune is influenced more by people like lil wayne or that new kanye west track.. i doubt they even know what grime is, or if rappers exist outside america.

I dunno why it has to be grime influenced, loads of that dirty south stuff has big 808s/claps in it, from Miami Bass to Crunk.

It's more the sub bass and the semi-bashment rhythm. And grime has definitely had some input into US rap via Dizzee working with Lil Jon/UGK.
