Not hijacking the thread but.....

House dance is a US style the roots go waay back and incorporate styles such as lofting. The dance has since developed and these days appears to incorporate street styles such as locking and popping as well as tap, latin etc

2 years ago I went to a house dance night in London and it was wicked- The DJs played pure tune and there were a number of jazz\fusion dancers there as well- Real Pity that night didn't carry on

Here in the UK Our equivalent dance style came through the Jazz Funk scene which incorporated footwork, spins and floor work (i.e knee drops, intricate turns\spins) half\ full splits and drops.

If you check some of old Dance Energy clips on Youtube you see the odd good dancer (as well as lots of not so good ones!)

This scene was a national one through which some legendary dancers came, virtually every town had its top dancers. That scene led to the Jazz dance scene which is another story not for this thread!

As house superseded disco & jazz-funk at all-dayers and club nights mainly in the midlands and North many of the dancers use to throw down to house - The scene reaching a peak around 1990

Unfortunately that scene is now virtually dead the demise starting with the arrival of substances and further exacerbated by flooding the market with music to go with those substance i.e the rave scene....

Back to the present -and the point I'm making...

As much as there is a danger of poor MC Skank tunes flooding the scene the one positive is that people are dancing again in clubs.

It wouldn't surprise me to see 1 or 2 dancers popping up at Funky events- If this starts to happen it will just be house in the UK gong full circle i.e Underground house where in addition to a regular crowd who like the music serious dancers can go and drop just like it was and should always have been- All thats required are DJ's who can play a consistent quality level of tunes 1 after the other, a wooden dance floor and Good Sound system

There is a real chance to create a lasting music led scene and I for one really hope that happens.

Every time I hear this song I think of the ad for "Wow Bass Level 2" that they play on Rinse between shows

blood, im trying to touch down in the UK just so i could go out and have a boogie to some funky at bar rumba or something..glad people are getting back on it, its necessary! we still do those dances here in NY...

it really is refreshing to go overseas and be at a nice funky party. no hype, everyone is just groovin and having a great time. i'm not hating on home, but i just don't think we could pull off that same chill energy here in nyc ... something about funky being a london thing that is very integral to the party atmosphere, dunno

Yeah make sure you check a club that has some space or you wont be able to do anything!

btw Shelter are hosting a night at the ministry over here in May think I'm going to reach as I've not been to Shelter NYC..

Its interesting you say that as many people in the UK would like more clubs like the shelter!


The main difference (and this is where some people get confused) is that in NY the dance culture as part of the club experience has continued and evolved from the disco days where as in the UK (for various reasons) the dance culture in house (as I stated before) it has all but gone.

FYI

There is still a dance culture on the Northern Soul, Jazz & Break dancing scenes.
