i like to leave ideas to rattle around inside my head all day....if i remember it then it was deffantly a good idea....if i forget the idea then it can have been that good

Nah mate write stuff down, doodle any ideas down because too many times I've turned away, got a phone call, or just plain forgot an absolute stormer of an idea. I can sometimes see the trace shadow of the idea, but not the shape, form, colour, texture, etc as clearly as when it first popped into my mind and wish I had just stopped to write down that little moment of insipration.
I'd be lost without my sketchbook tbh.

take breaks
don't fuck up your workflow
if you're not feelin it, step away and come back later
I usually have my best ideas as soon as i wake up, so i try to save my mornings for tunes
PROTECT YOUR EARS! monitor as low as you can.. they don't have new inner ears on the market yet, so save them so you can be an old geezer still making tunes.

Mute the bass, mute the kick, then make sure theres NO bass below say 150 hz, keeps the bass end nice and clean.
And also write shit down!
And experiment as well, just drag random plugins onto things and watch the effects, sometimes it works, sotimes it doesnt.

I was going to accuse you of being a mental until I realised you were referring to the rest of the track. I hope...
I would high pass the whole track at 20-30Hz though.

learning how to layer.
ie, instead of searching for one source of sound to create a noise, learn how to put multiple ones together to achieve the noise. so useful in all aspects of tunes, especially drums.

Yeah one thing I learned about mixing levels, is if your unsure about how they sound turn the volume really low, you should able to hear the key parts equally loud i.e bass, kick, snare. So now I listen to as many different levels as I can, with and without headphones on

using gate after reverbs in the effect chain...alot more accurate control on unwanted frequency's/noise flying about as result of using reverb...'reverb time' is useful to control but not as accurate, and automated bypass is just a pain.

learned how to use subtractive synthesis properly. Building sounds from scratch shits all over presets once you really get your head around it (not wishing to reopen that ol' can o' worms...) - especially if you really want to really pursue your own sound (which i'm sure most of us do).
Also, the notebook thing is a really good idea. Got into doing that recently. Just the act of writing stuff down helps to develop ideas.

Finding and making good use of samples. It's an artform in itself.
Samples = Soul.
And try to use compression as little as possible.

Also... Not so much a technique, more a useful tool; learn to play an instrument if you don't do so already. It will enhance your productions dramatically!
