the idea that joy had been repressed in music for a long time until this point can only be a subjective reflection in this context. i can't see how you could argue that that applies in any objective sense

ya i prolly take this music shit more seriously, and read into it more than a lot of people. but hey, that's what the tune makes me think and it's how it makes me feel.
but funky really is the first truly "happy" UK urban music in a long time, no? i mean garage had some bright moments but not like, Joyful and celebratory like this.

nb fwiw i like the video. unashamedly basic and a lot of fun, which is how i always felt about the tune anyway. and any kind of critical thinking abt bongo jam that stretches to more than one sentence is bloody ridiculous

plus that would ignore the fact that house has been bubbling along in London / the UK under the radar of most outside it for a pretty long time
it would also ignore Mala! and plenty others besides
and 'urban' is a problematic one

point taken but even in this kind of party ukg the mood is still reserved, restrained and cool, and not the uninhibited joy of bongo jam.
that's my feeling and my perspective as an outsider anyhow.

Missed this before...amazing video, totally abstract and no bling/club/champagne/cars etc....
genius.
also think that for totally different reasons the bongo jam video is sick - its just got a sense of humour that does not happen in U.S. style videos....reminds me of the 'carry on' films in a way....
