Absolutely, I hate it when it's just a laptop set with no external hardware & the guy just looks like he's checking his emails. YAWN.
Biggup to bass clef for trumpeting.
When I play live I bring a variety of: Steeldrum, Mbira, bass guitar (sometimes), Air FX, this wierd little string thing I don't even know what it's called & a laptop (& CD's for backup.)
To matey a few posts ago - how is vinyl DJ'ing so hugely superior to laptop dj-ing? Unless you're using just dubplates then at the end of the day you're still mixing someone elses tunes, as opposed to ones you've written yourself.
IMO the writing & production of a tune is the holy grail, not usually the method of delivery. Certain blistering live sets aside (Roni Size, Prodigy, Orbital, Visionary Underground etc)
A good tune in a club or party is a good tune. Personally if I'm on a night out & dancing like a nutbag I don't give a fuck if it's from Vinyl, Laptop, CD or totally live - If I can get down to it it's all good.
A lot of big names just use CD mixers anyway most of the time (eg Freq Nasty - I sat next to him on the train down to a gig once & he told me)
