most artists dont, but thats probably ego. in how many cases would that person buy the ep/album had they not "found" a download somewhere? not many at all. how many cases would that person go to a show or buy merch after discovering an artist via piracy? i dont know the statistics, but i'd wager a lot more. plus artists dont get much money from record sales anyway regardless of contract.

I sell records to people who spend thousands of dollars a year on music. Alot of people spend alot of money on music. I buy and sell music for a living. its all about who you know. you shouldnt listen to those Mp3 stealing, fake-dj, sh*t talking, pennies-on-the-dollar spending internet cowards. they are wrong. All you need now is a flash drive right ?

cool? i was suggesting 'everyone doing it' as a bit of a weak justification for putting up even more downloads on your own blog. which it is. sheep mentality eh.

..but regardless, your car chat... i wouldn't steal a car nah - firstly i dont have a drivers licence (heh), but it would be pretty shit if someone had spent a year or two of their wages, work and time saving up for it, for me to come along and bump it in a flash. im not a hippy, but i wouldnt like someone to steal my car so why should i steal theirs? if someone offered me a car knowingly then yeh id probably cruise it around until i hit a wall.

ego? often you will find its the artists going crazy about their shit leaking everywhere. are you suggesting that artists are actually wanting to give their music away for free but their egos are stopping them from getting in touch with the blogs? hm. if artists or record companies want people to post music, they get in touch.

people then progressing to buy the featured EP/album depends somewhat on the quality of download and what quantity of the music is offered. i already said that i love blogs for the discovery angle of all sorts of music... im not suggesting blogs be outlawed or whatever. and nah, i dont buy every single track of music i have on my comp.

what im saying is that theres a difference between helping people discover stuff through blogs, and offering full zip files of 320kbps mp3s (or WAVs) of brand new albums/ep's with hi res artwork etc. Once you have that.. you have the album surely? individual tracks to highlight a release for someone is a completely different thing.. as i would say they are doing a good job introducing a listener to something which they wouldnt have discovered otherwise. if they like, they can and will explore deeper.

artists dont get much money from record sales aint true really is it now? anyway, they should be allowed to make decisions for themselves on how they want their music to be received (bought, given away to promote a big tour etc), its not really your right to ensure they get less or do it a certain way because you think they're not earning much from it. many artists survive on record sales alone, and the ones who aren't nowadays probably would have been better off a decade ago. music is a craft and people deserve to be paid for it.

nah i dunno about that. are you saying that that you wouldnt buy an album without hearing the whole thing in full as a pirate version? i find that pretty odd and it kinda contradicts what you were saying before about people then progressing to buy the album/ep.

look if you're going to blog about music why not just stream a file,write a few words about why you like the tune and then point people in the right direction.

we're not just taking about upsetting artists its also the record shops who sell the music that are affected and to a certain extent it does mess about with people's livelihoods.

to add my 2c to the discussion, i think you should support artists you like so you shouldn't put their stuff up on blogs. just put up 1min clips or something.

this one is a bit ambiguous because these remixes weren't official and flylo let them float around the internet for ages as promo. and the 12" was a bootleg.

lots of blogs put up old stuff that usually you would only buy secondhand anyway- so that counts quite justifiably as research & i don't think the artists are loosing out that much.

but putting up bullion. that was just wrong.

I think constrobuz is right on the whole. With an extremely limited release like this it is egotistical in some sense but you've got to respect that at the same time. However looking at it another way releases like this are actually the opposite of egotistical, in this example FlyLo who is now pretty popular with his last album is putting out this completely under the radar EP for his true fans to keep them happy (i realise im assuming that the hes got the right intentions, either way doesnt matter), i love the fact ive got records that are extremely limited and im lucky enough to be one of the people who owns them, im sure other people feel the same. That said, I still downloaded this because i love his music, I would buy the vinyl if i had the chance. Another thing to keep in mind is that this isnt available as an mp3 release anyway i dont see why people should be denied listening to it, that would be getting your ego involved. If the physical copy is limited it doesnt mean that the music itself should be heard by a limited amount of people.
