People have been using 'preset patches' on guitars and flutes and pianos and tablas and guiro and lutes for thousands of years, it's only in the past thirty or so that building a sound from the ground up has even been possible.

i always use presets

75% of the time i will change them ALOT

25% of the time they go into the tune untouched bar EQ'ing / Comp

whats the difference between sampling a sound from a vinyl and sampling a sound from a preset on a synth? not much i think....

if it works do it. i remember when i started producing i used to come on this forum and see alot of stuck up producers talking about "I synthesize EVERYTHING even my HI Hats" and "I HATE it when the sub is not in Key with the Bassdrum!" and "Never compress sub/x/y/z". For a while I really listened to these people and my tunes suffered because of it.

4 years down the line, where are they? Still making boring beats. Still spending hours making a mediocre sound just for the self gratification that they made it themselves. If you enjoy it then thats all good, but don't try to make other producers live your dream. Theres alot of new guys on here and I think they should all be encouraged to follow 3 simple rules;

1. Keep it simple
2. If it sounds good do it
3. Spend time on your mixdown

If you want to rinse the same preset in all your tunes - Do it!

Don't listen to the stuck up guys on here who have ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE VSTS and seem to be encyclopedias on compression and eq because normally those are the guys who have been making boring beats for 10 years!

And thats the advantage (and very nearly point) of electronic music imo!

It's an advantage. It's a great option to have available to you but if some people are more into rhythms and melody and stuff and are happy to just pick some presets that they can work with and just go at it rather than spending months getting bogged down learning techniques that aren't really relevant to what they want to acheive then fair play to them.

Personally I'm almost incapable of using a preset without tweaking it, though, just because I know enough to know how I can make the sound do what I want it to more... and obv if you're rinsing presets while playing a one note bassline with a predictable rhythm then you're unlikely to do anything particularly interesting.

Its not just Dubstep.

I was browsing Electro House on Beatport some days ago an heard Brutal Electro in no less than 2 or 3 TOP 10 TUNES

I don't have Massive.

Z3ta all the way baby, 6 oscillator madness! Although the presets in Z3ta sound like bad Euro dance/cheesy trance. I've been very very tempted to make a Euro dance tune because of it.

Nu genre alert: Eurostep

I reckon Albino 3 is more widely used than Massive. Used in all Skream, Benga, Rusko, etc tracks.

Yea I tried getting to grips with Massive but I definately prefer Albino3. You can probably get some amazing sounds out of Massive but I don't know it well enough and seeing as I can get good sounds from Albino I don't really bother

the presets on my access virus are quite nice

i used a modified brutal electro in my tune lets be blunt

I don't have massive

I'm still trying to get my head around Reaktor tbh

I have, use and enjoy Massive and never do anything remotely "Brutal Electro-ish"

I use presets. I sample. I don't give a f_ck.

Oh no, not at all! (unless, you know...thats what youre going for...) Massive part of my problem with dubstep at the moment is the "difference" between so many tunes being the type of "craaaaooowww" (or whatever ) noise, and veeery little else.

Think I might be explaining myself badly. Its the idea of someone going through some patches, and hearing one and deciding on that being the basis of their idea for the track that gets me. Seems to be music made the wrong way round. If music is meant to be an expression of creativity, surely it would have to go the other way. Idea -> Make your sound.

Again, its harder to verbalise (and less clear cut) than I thought, but the idea of a preset being (worse case scenario) the basis of a tune, or even the idea behind one just seems a bit unmusical to me.

I spose, theres: Hear preset -> Gives you idea -> You fuck around with noise until its what youre hearing in your head. But thats not really what I meant originally...and is gonna require more thinking on my behalf tbh
