people should remember that the meat and bones of this music is the unexpected. suprises in tunes. that's what hooked me.
as soon as i'm not suprised, that's when i'll start to worry.

Agreed - a clean slate with minimal rules... low end frequencies and a skankable bpm range

The spectrum of influence that makes up the rest of the canvas is what maintains freshness imo. Sounds pulled from any source with limited restriction. That and sub wave bending is where the innovation lies methinks.

I want more garage flavour, more swing, more 4x4 steppers and more - lots more - reggae / dubstep cross over tunes.

I'm hearing loads of stuff that hasn't got a garage vibe. For me dubstep has to have a garage undertone, loads of producers seemed to have forgottenthis!
Still enough quality tunes out there to keep me more than happy mind

Of course there are exceptions to the rule and there are a few artists out there pushing new ideas and sounds but just not as many as a while back.
Check out the new J Da Flex Tune on his myspace (Ellzibub)

I think there is plenty of variety out there if you look, and to be honest you dont really have to look that hard. I have some what would be considered unknown artists with material coming out next year.
but and slightly off topic...
I do feel with regards to nights that the same people are being booked too much, even down to people who you would consider playing the same sound on after each other on the same night.
I dont think there are enough producers/dj's to support the current level of exposure, its almost grown to quickly in that respect, this is why i limit how many nights i go to now.

Gotta remember, tho that alot of the newish producers never made garage in the first place. They're drawing from different influences., which is what draws me even more into this genre. Don't get me wrong, I love garage vibes, but I would love even more for dubstep to get a vibe of it's own (hell maybe even two or three!

 )
UFO's on the money, though. We can afford to be picky these days. Hell I remember back when you'd get one release every two months....if you were lucky! Barefiles? Ha! I remember back when you had to haggle w/ a bunch snooty 13-year olds on DC++ just to get the latest Rinse sets! You had to walk two miles in the snow to cut your dubplates....uphill, both ways, with no shoes...
get off my lawn..

Or haggle with Darkside to get in the mixes forum on Rinse. Or catch a thread on dubplate.net before the YouSendIt ran out. Fucking Stone Age, that was. Hold tight Deaps.

Personally, the state of things has had me down for a while.
There's brilliant stuff about still, but more and more it's getting difficult to pick out from under piles of rubbish. Martin, Musty, Paul and Boomnoise make good points.
I'm very impressed that this hasn't turned into a dnb v. garage flame war yet, btw

lets get the flame war on, 'cos it must be all the braindead dnb, breaks and whatnot indie rock producers hoppin the bandwagon that are makin dubstep suck.
..
no just kidding. I'd like to peer over the crystal ball and see what's the situation going to be in 2/3 years or so.
