if you dont buy the sound system argument its because you can't really argue against it in a discussion about Dubstep
You know!

If anything, I just want people to understand that a good night is about presenting the full package to people. Not skimping on the sound, so you can afford the headliner.

we used to do modulate with bar9 at an absolutely blinding little venue called esko, it was perfect, we had a good soundsystem and the guy who ran the place was so up for making the nights work it was great... Unfortunately the venue was right on the edge of the town centre (leicester) and although wed often fill the place it only opened on fridays and saturdays and never really made enough money at the end of each month.

I loved that place we had goth trad, walsh, hatcha, crazyd, subscape, stenchman, rob sparx and many more grace the venue and everyone left with nothing but positive words. We put Leicester on the map for liquid d n b for a while with filtered, Nu tone said it was one of his best gigs of last year...

Anyway we always tried our best with every aspect of the night, I wanted people to really remember every good night out at that place and in a way it worked... Esko, for those that experienced it, will always have a special place in the punters hearts. I like to think most promoters think like that, I know some dont but no one cares about them anyway....

In my opinion, it's little start-up promoters who get themselves a venue with a shitty soundsystem and then try and book a big name to pull in the crowd. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, but if your feelings are hurt then I was talking to you!

That is the only thing that I think can kill dubstep. Shitty promotions pull in people who aren't really interested in good sound, but who can easily recognise the big names and will spend money on the door. You probably know the sort of nights I'm talking about - people are more interested in finding MDMA than actually listening to the music. I'm not one of those people who is particularly bothered about gurners at DMZ, because at the end of the day they're not affecting the direction that DMZ is heading in. Mala and them man built the reputation and let the night speak for itself after that - little to no promotion needed and you only need to watch the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Birthday videos to see how many people come out to the dances!

Big up the people who have been doing it from day, and all of the up and coming promotions that are pushing boundaries. Promoters - Start promoting. Stop relying on a next person's reputation to do the footwork that you can't be arsed to do!

Wheres the link to your rig?:)

I have more of a problem with sloppy DJs who get booked time after time over amp issues. That is not only a Dubstep problem but just the way it is and it will never change. All about the money.

Esko was the best club this city has had for a while, good control on cliental, and the gigs put on by yourself and others were guaranteed to be of a particular quality...always felt like it was an Event and gathering as opposed to another night out, same goes for Kontakt when it was at the Shed.

kontakt remains a good event, but sophbeck is rough and the nights feel like a free for all instead of the gatherings of like minded passionate folks that it once was. Perhaps this is what makes it financially viable...i dunno.

It's easy for me to say this as i don't promote but experimentation with weird and wonderful venues (instead of clubs in the centre) might bring up some untapped weird new homes for dubstep in Leicester.

Agreeing with the general consensus on sound but an engineer's constant love and attention isn't ALWAYS necessary - Plastic People seems to get on just fine - seems like prep work involves not much past switching on an amp...

This!

One thing I really fucking hate is people that will only skank out to the big names. I can understand it being a bit empty towards the beginning but i've seen dickheads standing there to some small name dj drinking their drinking and trying to act all cool and elitist cus they don't listen to shitty djs and then the main act will come on and play the same kind of tunes and they'll be brocking all over the shop. why? why not dance to everything!

yes but thats because plastic people spent a serious amount of £££ on the rig installed in there. with electronic crossovers and amps, these days...once you've spent the initial money on a quality system, all you need to do is tweak it here and there for certain nights. easy...

very little compares to iration soundsystem. maybe a full set of funktion one, but other than that, iration are running it, imo. i've been there when the room was packed to the rafters and the weight was just heaving. you know you're in front of a fuck off soundsystem when the room's that packed and is still running people down with sound! leeds has it so good!

Then I guess neither of you have ever promoted, or at least not in a smaller town. Up here you can put on just residents and they could be the best dj's in the world but there wont be a crowd. As soon as you book a big name though the crowd comes, and with it the MONEY. I'm sorry, i love dubstep, but I'm not prepared to LOSE money just to keep the elitists happy. Luckily we have clubs here with decent rigs, but if there were only clubs with halfway decent rigs and not a shit load of subs then I'd make do.

And DID, the system generally gets turned up for the main act, people are drunker and it's easier to skank out in a crowd of others doing the same, otherwise you feel like a chump.

yes it's all very well taking the moral high ground because you want to dance to local djs and not a name but most people aren't like that and this will not change..

therefore you seem to be asking promoters to not get a crowd just to please you...

Can't stand the Ipod ones! Really earplugs suck imo. Started to bring my HD-25s on the way to work :D.

I somewhat agree with the topic starter. A night without proper subwoofers is far worse then a night with a big warm subby bass instalation :D.

over the past two years i have seen some "big names" play here in ireland, in the uk and on mainland europe who clear were not up to playing to a crowd at peak time in the club. these have mostly been dubstep producers who are trying to be djs but i have seen this in other genres too. the same issue, producers trying to be djs.
there are so many amazing djs being missed out on because of this.

promoters are spend money on the names and in turn in some cases the quality of the night x or y sound suffers. certain things on the finance end need to be looked at if you are running a night. you dont have to blow the budget out when making bookings, leave some room for to spend on other elements on the night, think of the sound.

if it is good it becomes a talking point about your night and in turn, it turn into its own promotion tool. which is a good thing but if the sound is not up to scratch it then becomes a negative talking point about your night. which, obviously is something no night or promoter needs.

spend the money, it will pay off in the end.

I've only seen iration twice and both times I was disappointed. Might have been two off nights I suppose. Seemed to have weight but no clarity on the mids/tops...

I felt the same, not quite sure why it's rated so highly.
