having the sub too high will also cause me to turn up the highs as well.
i think we can all agree how irritating those highs can get.

some interesting points here. I dont have a sub yet so find myself boosting my bass then when i burn a cd to listen to in the car it distorts like fuck (although i dont have a sub in my car either).

In order to get a true reflection of what a song will sound like in a club i assume i need to get a sub?

Yes, but you can get to a point where even if you can't hear it properly on your system you will know what it will sound like on a bigger system.

You just need a good pair of monitors + get to know them inside out.

I've got the new krk rokit 6's. i'm slowly getting to grips with them but the best way for me to learn how to mix bass on my speakers would be if someone lent me a sub to hook up to my speakers so that i could do a before and after test. from that i could judge where to sit my sub a lot better.

so, anyone fancy shipping a krk subwoofer, preferably one of the special edition white ones over to the west coast of scotland? it'll be here for a night then i'll get a couple of pigeons on it straight back to you in time for supper!

miscreant, maybe your sub is too low? pitch it up an octave and see what happens..

good idea, i normally use a combination of two subs each with 2 sines playing, 2 of them pitched down an octave. For some basses this works really well but for the deeper stuff it seems to make my speakers go nuts - and thats with proper eqing of different elements, the harmonics just seem to rattle the cones horribly.
