i don't think so - it's a way your brain is constructed
some people have it, some haven't

NNNAAAAHHHH !
no way man, of course you can learn how to do it, its just a form of deep listening, you just need to concentrate on the freq. ... the actual sound waves / vibrations ... I got a crazy D.I.Y book wot learns you how to vizualize sounds as colored geometric shapes !!!! The ability seems to be more intuative for some and synaesthesia is, as I understand it, the klinical variety were it can actually become hard for the person to tell the differance between sound & color & smell .....

yea but putting that ' landscape' back onto tape is the hard part.
i think learning to do something like this defeats the perpose, cause its just the way my brain works..i think like this when im doing maths for example as well which isn't a good thing really.

We interrupt this program to bring you a public service announcement from the Dept of Hell Science

I don't have it, seeing colours that is while listening to audio...
...don't think I want to either as it sounds like cross wired signals in your brain, too much A class, chemtrails or
maybe it's the start of...
...nasa project blue beam step 3
^^google that shit
wonder if Kode9 has come across this in his sonic warfare research ???
and now back to your regularly scheduled broadcast...

Talking of 'painting' tracks/sounds, anyone here familiar with Metasynth?
http://uisoftware.com/MetaSynth/
It's a fascinating program. Used it on a few tracks made with a friend, though I found the whole interface a bit vexing.

yea I get it alot, only when im concentrate on it though, not visually though more in my imagination so if im thinking hard about a track I visualise a colour in my minds eye, I often find when im making music if the track ive made is sounding shit it doesnt really come out with a very pure or clean colour, and when its come together better or sounding good to me i can visualise something clearer, id def put alot of it down to imagination though apart from ful on synthasaesia thats shits mad!

yeh aphex twin encoded mad pictures of his face which you can see using a spectrograph to play his music.
heres a section of 'equation' viewed with a spectrograph:

This is a really interesting topic, and I'm being serious by saying, i wonder if anything as well as the way you are born can develop this.. maybe years of intaking ? or your past experiences.. we should do a poll.. lol
I can see what everyone's saying about the colour thing, but i defiantly feel it more.. bass in ya chest and hi freq's making you tingle.. and i feel this when I'm both mashed and straight but i think it highlighted more when I'm mashed... just gonna go test it out again tho to be sure ... lol
again .. really interesting topic..

i love spectral stuff, it sounds fuckin nuts. one of my mates has been recreating real instruments' spectra lately with the aid of a sonogram and additive synthesis, like FFT with a massive number of bands. he gets really close sometimes.

It's all about emotion and the use of sound's within a track that trigger the colors for me! not like my entire room turns blue, but in my head I get colors from the emotional elements of the tune playing..
It's a great tool for putting set's together!

Trying to say it's the way CERTAIN people's brains work is false. We all have the ability to associate colours to emotions to sounds etc.
But it opens the door to more- INTERCONNECTEDNESS, HARMONY, METAPHOR.
Look into it
Good to hear your experiences and all that
