I have this convo like every weekend with my buddies. Mine are (at the moment, at least)...
Donuts
Illmatic
Madvillainy
36 Chambers
Low End Theory
No surprises there.
"Objectively," I think the list should probably be Pac Nas Big Dilla and someone else (I say Doom but could be anyone). Illmatic should be on the list for anyone who cares about lyricism, and Dilla for anyone who cares about beats. Unfortunately, I don't think Doom has any "perfect" albums like I consider Donuts or Illmatic.

Also no 'De La' anyone?
It's too hard to list only five. Of course "3 Feet High And Rising" especially is one of the most influental albums in hip hop.
No Common?
No Eric B & Rakim?
No GM Flash & Furious Five?
No Run DMC?
No N.W.A?
No Ras Kass?
No Too Short?
The point is: my favourite albums are probably not the most influental ones. If I wanted to list, say, 5 or 10 most influental hip hop albums, my list would be different.

NWA Straight outta compton
eric B & rakim Paid in full

That's the whole point
I'm now wondering whether the Blackstar LP should feature, and yes MF Doom doesn't have a 'perfect' album so he don't deserve it, and (I'll probably get batterd for this) but neither does Tupac....

Operation Doomsday - MF Doom
I Need Drugs - Necro
Funcrusher Plus - Company Flow
It's On (Dr. Dre) 187Um Killa - Eazy-E
Doggystyle - That tall dude with the braids
....this almost feels like a betrayal, so many solid gold tits left out, Madlib, Cage, Jay Dee... and the ENTIRE old school. Damn.
Nice to see donuts on some lists, beat cds never got enough respect IMO.

Personally, I'd have to say maybe
Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought
Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me
The Roots - Phrenology
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Common - Be
Percee P - Perseverence
Jaylib - Champion Sound
Big L - Lifestylez Of Da Poor And Dangerous
Or thats all I can think of at the moment. I would have put some beat albums in there but the topic says rap albums, not hip hop albums. And I know thats eight, but tough.

Oh yeah Edan in incredible! "Sing It Shitface" is such a classic tune! Both "Beauty and the Beat" and "Primitive Plus" are killer albums! Not in my personal top 5 but hey, you gotta make choices
