How old are you now btw, if you've been making growls since you were 12?
I am 15, 16 soon on december the 3rd so I've spent at least 3 years messing on with sound design and stuff haha. I remember when SMANS was first released and I was amazed by the cool bass haha thats what started it all off to be honest; I just really wanted to make my bass talk. But I had no idea how to.

Big ups on the growls dude, and I know you said you were working ona tutorial but in the mean time do you think you could touch on abletons EQ presets? (assuming you use ableton) if you aren't using live, could you still touch on general EQ rules for growls? I refresh this thread every half hour to see if you've replied :P

its no masterpiece but there is some good growl content in there.

this growl was made with massive (AI and Chrome) > ohmicide > crazy exaggerated EQ > ohmicide > EQ for vowel effect > compression.

no real secret to this kind of sound....
Now there is a thing: If you focused the drop on that growl, it wouldn't sound as good as it sounds. The big point is to use these growls just as fillers instead of main synths.

Bass Growls In Massive

I found some basic parameters to start making growls with in massive:

Wavetables: Modern Talking, Chrome, AI, Gentle Speech
OSC: Drop all the oscillators an octave or 2
Voicing: Make monophonic and turn the glide up so you can get a nice sliding effect
Filters: Use a low pass, scream, comb filter and route envelope 1 to it so you get a steady filter opening
Effects: Use Bit crushers, Sine Shapers, Sample & Hold effects to make sound dirtier
Modulation OSC: Use the phase effect to make sound dirtier
Thats how i personally start a growl synth good luck

So for this sample pack we included a bunch of sounds from static hero, including some soloed growl. Its a whole bunch of random shit but all of it comes from our songs and we have used every one of the samples because i was so tired of getting sample packs with sounds that i never heard the artist use (im looking at you zomboy)

It was said somewhere above me that we use growls as filler, and this is such a crucial point and Barely Alive puts a lot of effort into making it like that. The reason we do this is so that when you hear the sound its like FFFFUUUUUU i want more. Its all about withholding stimulation if you catch my drift :q: :q: :q:

Also regarding the eqing that i use its usually an eq with lots of sharp boosts . The important part here is that you are putting it on a sound that has frequencies in that area to be boosted.

Thanks for the explanation and I totally agree, these sounds arn't the big one you hear right at a drop. I was just wondering about the eq presets in Ableton, because whenever I put one on a sound it becomes very vowely (I'll give it that) but it also is taking so much out of the sound. Do you use an effect rack and like replace the low ends you loose? I'm very curious and thanks again.

No resampling, just a saw wave passed through a fuck ton of shit.

And here's some macros for control surface. Drop the fst into the control surface folder or drag it onto control surface from where ever. To link shit to them click ''link to controller'' and then in the dropdown you can select whatever one you wanna use.

Made this tonight. Soundcoud totally ruined the high-end on it, but whatever. Was going for a pegboardnerds kinda growl.

Any tips on making it better? I like the hollowness of it, which gives it a nice hard texture, but I want it a little more wet sounding without completely destroying its cleanliness.

Messed with the disto wavetable in massive and added ringmod, phaser, and the fx phaser to the sound with unison up to 8 got this very slight but noticable Datsik growl wobble from his earlier stuff. Then the daft filter got the movement just right, now if i resampled it a shit ton and mess around more with the int patch will i be datsik?

I'd be curious to hear how this sounds with some delay, for the true Datsik style :P
