is it impossible (or so difficult workflow-wise) to produce stuff like this without any hardware? just fucking around on your daw. i mean it has just always sounded so "MPC" to me this music. and very sample-heavy, like i should be a full-time crate digger to give it a shot

MPC isn't necessary. It helps to be able to play stuff in by hand but you really just need to turn the grid off (and have an intimate relationship with swing) You can sample and resample yourself, put it through bitcrushing for the hardware crunch. I like programming clean virtual instruments and then processing them to sound like I lifted them off vinyl.
