Ah nice to see some City of God fans. I study film at college so Ive got plenty of films to go through yet.

Anyone seen or heard of 'Irrerversible' ?

Its a fucked up french film that takes place in a gay parasian brothel, camera work and dialouge is amazing, pretty brutal and shocking aswell, one of the weirdest yet intruiging films that Ive seen to date.

Saw a wicked film the other day - Everything is Illuminated.

Think it went under the radar cos it has Frodo Baggins in it!

And speaking of films that went under the radar, I thoroughly recommend Frailty:

Parson wrote:i've seen a lot of miike films

check out:

happiness of the katakuris
bird people of china
audition

most of his movies are shit though.

if you wanna see some good japanese shit, check out takeshi kitano's Fireworks (hana-bi). he's got a lot of great movies.

if you like oldschool pulp/exploitation films, you should check out seijun suzuki. branded to kill is a good place to start.
datura wrote:Yeah, I'd agree with Parson, also the Dead or Alive Trilogy and Graveyard of Honour. City of Lost Souls was entertaining as well. If you like the more mad stuff, Fudoh is pretty mental.

Another Japanese director to check is Kiyoshi Kurosawa (who made the original Pulse - although it is far from his best film). He is more philosophical, but his films can be brilliant: Pulse, Bright Future and Charisma are all excellent films.
shit hot, cheers you two!
will get on the case with those films and directors you mentioned. they all sound really interesting! i don't mind deeper films, but anything in japanese with people shouting at eachother is a great film by default in my opinion.

nice one

Finally saw Juno the other night. Not bad. I have never in my life met a highschool kid who talks like that, but other than that it was a good flick.

A quality film. Its something you can watch repeatedly and still get enjoyment from as well. Its a shame it flopped at the cinema, would have loved to have seen more....

@ datura - city of men (film sequel to city of god) did make it to the UK, it was part of this years LFF. i saw it, it was good but perhaps not as affecting as the original? liked the cinematography though

@ parson - re: neon genesis. didn't know about the freud influences on the script, cheers for the heads up. ended up doing alot of (amateurish) research on the sepiroth, apocryphal books etc after finishing the series. innaresting stuff. anno goes pretty deep - nice to see an animation with that level of depth. so much imagery and reference to spot in the series. can't be bothered to go back to it though 'cos i just get mad and want to punch the shit out of the shinji character (but i guess that's the point).
just finished watching gunbuster. wasn't as deep as NGE, but hinted at the kind of thing he'd end up doing.
audition was amazing. lost my copy though. still have the case, but not the disc. :|

@ datura + parson - ever checked out teshigahara? eureka video released face of another and pitfall. both great. simple and calm yet haunting. also, just watched his woman of the dunes. claustrophobic.

also - in the vein of some of miike's more psychadelic moments (although times a million) check shozin fukui's stuff. suprisingly non-contraversial, yet difficult viewing nonetheless

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqGTzi1- ... re=related

edit: i'll check Kiyoshi Kurosawa. any relation?

@ £10 bag - before you check any other japanese film, check kurosawa's Ran. it's very important.

I just watched the first Indiana Jones to kinda prep for the new one... such a good flick! I think that one's my favorite.
