Basically the same deal as a year ago... US national debt is about to hit their legal limit, they'll have to raise the ceiling again so that they don't default on their debts.

With the Senate basically being an enormous partisan bitch-fest now more than ever, the Republicans like to make sure any 'agreement' on raising the ceiling is left until the very last minute (it was the evening before last time, I think) so as to make Obama's government look disorganised and inefficient and to make the public think that raising the debt ceiling is an extra special emergency measure instead of something that's been done nearly twice a year for the last 50 years.
