Ive been producing for 2 years now, finally coming into my own so to speak with my sound so Ive been sending out some of the finished products out to labels. Ive had 2 responses, both positive and have been offered to work with a local label that I never sent a demo to. Ive really been producing as a hobby, after my full time job at a car dealership, just in my spare time. I do my own artwork as well which seems to go right with my music. My question is has anyone had success releasing via tunecore or anyother go between for the major digital distributors? Has anyone regretted signing with a label? i only ask because my music and art are the only things I have left these days that are mine, theyre not perfect, but I like them. Id hate to get screwed out of owning my stuff. one of my main goals is to get on beatport, is that even worth it?

perhaps consider letting a few of your tunes get out there on smaller labels....knowing that you're going to make fuck all, but it might help you to build up some steam online if you pick the right label. hone your production skills as much as possible....then go after some bigger labels. if you don't get anywhere from that, THEN consider getting your tunes mastered and release them yourself. easier said than done i know, but each individual part of the process will give you experience and contacts. i'm sure a lot of people here feel like they are in the same boat.

it depends on what you want to get out of producing..if its just a hobby then don't sweat it...biggest thing is making sure that your dealing with a real label don't wanna get swindled

thanks guys, your advise makes a lot of sense. also when I say hobby, that just means Im not willing to risk my familys financial security on my dreams. i do take my music very seriously though just to be clear. thanks again for the responses, love this community.

Two years isn't long enough to worry imo. But I think it is worthwhile, getting recognition by peers and building a fanbase can't hurt anyone imo. Unless you're burial I suppose.

Looking at this all, I wonder if the OP really thought about the fact that they were coming onto a forum filled with largely unsuccessful amateurs looking for tips on making that 'big break'.

Theres many people on this forum that are signed and there is a few people who own labels or work for labels, lots of large producers used to post on here on the regular aswell..advice is advice, i think most people really do know what they should do in terms of heading in the right direction but its only until someone else confirms it that you can really have faith in yourself

Anyone can get 'signed', even me.
The trick to standing out is pretty obvious imo, get your shit to the right people and they'll support it.
