I think the first half of Rival Dealer is really fucking good actually. I love music that has that dramatic sound like it's on the verge of breaking down into chaos. The rest is okay for background listening I guess

I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread. I've learnt that Burial, who we barely know the name of (plenty of reasons to not believe Will Bevan is his actual name) has come out to the world as a transgender through a sample at the end of a tune.

more evidence for it than being a transgender person.

Im glad someone thinks the same, i thought i was going mad, i'm very like... sensitive of becoming one of those burial megafans that get SO MUCH shit from the world (i can't even understand why people hate on someone loving something so much) so i don't usually pipe up in stuff like this, but this has genuinely upset me hahaha. So many people seem to be like "BUT WTF IT BURIAL IN A NEW DIRECTION", it's jus like look you dont understand, i'm not small minded i like so much music, if you saw my record collection you would be baffled, nicki minaj next to dillinja, next to venetian snares next to nick drake. But this is jus bad. it sounds like the dirty dancing soundtrack, but maybe thats what he was trying to do? make an album for his mum? i dunno. I dont wanna think about it. I'm gunna ignore this whole thing lol, maybe next christmas he'll do something even more drastically different but get it right

I'm no-one to judge other people's music tastes. I own several Bon Jovi CDs.

Burial: I like pitching down female vocals so they sound male, and pitching up male vocals so they sound like a girl singing. It can sound sexy as fuck.

Wire: That works. When I listen to the record, I can’t work out whether the vocals belong to males or females. And angels aren’t supposed to have no gender.

Burial: Really? Well that works nice with my tunes, kind of half boy half girl, but that can be dark too. Sometimes in a mirror people see the devil's face for a second, that wrong aspect, the eyes, in your own. When you are young you are pushed around by forces that are nothing to do with you. You’re lost, most of the time you don't understand what’s going on with yourself, with anything.

Third listen so far and I actually quite like this. It's really fucking weird obviously, Rival Dealer reminds me of stuff like Prodigy and the rest of the EP keeps giving me vibes of both the Weeknd and random christmas carols lol - it seems very upbeat and Christmassy sounding which I didn't expect from Burial really. It's definitely not gonna be my favourite Burial release but at the same time I don't think it's shit either, just very different. Got to admit it would be nice to have a bit more of the garage vibe in there in a perfect world but I'm enjoying this for what it is. I loved Kindred and Truant in the end and both were growers so we'll see what happen with this one.

The transgender "coming out" stuff is bollocks though, I'm pretty sure the "this i who I am" sample is just referencing the interviews where Burial talk about being a fan of old school hardcore music and more cheesy melodies, more of an anticipatory response to people being surprised that he'd put music like this out. Whatever sexuality Burial has it's highly unlikely that a man who was reluctant to even put his real name out in public until the tabloids got onto it is gonna come out through one of his EPs, especially as nobody really knows who the fuck he is in reality anyway lol. Makes a lot of sense reading his old interviews even if the music direction is unexpected. We'll see what happens, hoping for a release of the really garagey tune Four Tet played on Rinse recently in the coming year which should keep the more traditionalist fans happy at least.

that flute in RD is haunting me. still, the breaks sound all too cliché, but the flute really does it for me. can't get it out of my head.

the other two tunes aren't hrowing on me at all.

I think people are being very quick to judge things, i personally try to give new Burial a month or two before i decide, but thats just because i think that i never immediately resonate with his music.

As for the cheesiness of the new tunes, especially the chord progression / chorus-y piano in the last half of 'Come Down To Us' i can understand why people might think this is a total piss take and shit etc. But its just down to personal preference (obviously) and i dont mind it.

Ultimately i dont see how comparing 'Rival Dealer EP' to his older work does anyone any good at all. His older stuff is there, no one is stopping you from going back and listening to it. I can understand people hating this and loving his older work but getting angry or swearing off future Burial because of recent releases is unnecessary in my opinion. As many people on this thread have already said, you shouldnt completely ignore someone just because they have not produced a masterpiece in the last few releases. Even if you think post 'Untrue' Burial is shit, i think that Burial has bought some good will with most music fans to at least give a listen (not buy) his new work.

The thing i like the most about his new direction in 'Kindred', 'Truant / Rough Sleeper' and now this is the story-like progression of his longer tunes. His shorter tunes in 'Burial' and 'Untrue' definitely had a tangible atmosphere but they felt more like snippets of someone's life where as to me the new tunes feel like extended periods of time in someone else's shoes. It feels like he is sound tracking a short film with these longer tunes. I really enjoy the experience of his new songs even if i do miss the swinging garage beats or the less cheesy melodies...However i feel that his vocal sample selection and manipulation is still as great as i remember it from his previous work. At least for me personally although many might disagree.

And i think the sexuality/trans-gender aspect of the EP isnt meant to be taken literally as Burial coming. I think its more just a metaphor for anyone who is struggling in life with discrimination for a vast majority of things (sexuality, gender, race, religion, political ideaology...whatever). I just think this because to me Burial has always been about making his listeners feel welcome and if it were a literal sexuality-issue EP i feel like it would alienate those people who dont struggle with such problems in their lives.

Personally i like it so far. Although i can understand why people are pissed off etc. No need to get so angry or so insult-y. I mean no one is forcing you to listen to it hahaha chill out.. :corndance:
