Pressing on with Hells Angels (HST), its not really grabbed me but Im half way through at this point. If I spent less time fucking around on DSF I could finish it faster.

For some reason I bought High Fidelity, having not seen the film that came after it I guess I can go on to complain that the film isnt as good at a later date.

The Millionaire Next Door - Interesting points re; frugality and asset management, but too many chapters dedicated to the thought process being purchasing big American cars. Overall message of 'big-hat-no-cattle' is a good one to incorporate into a mindset.

Re-reading Ender's Game thanks to the movie.

The Hard Way - Only Jack Reacher book I hadn't read. Fairly standard stuff, slightly more emphasis on the detective side of things than out and out ass kicking. More accurate representation of London/the UK than most authors that try this sort of thing.

Starbucked - Story of Starbucks and how they've essentially thrown out the hippy mentalities and 'values' they had when they first started. Interesting from a random facts point of view, but ultimately disposal, even if you are a fan of coffee or have 'barista' on your CV.

Aldous Huxley - Doors of Perception (the book also has his essay Heaven and Hell in it)

Fight Club - Shorter than I was expecting, felt the vibe was captured well enough in the film, though couldn't quite disassociate from the adaptation when reading some of the sections, which was frustrating
61 Hours - One of the best in the Reacher series IMO. Ticks all the boxes.

The Master Of Disguise - Autobiography of the CIA agent who was behind the operation featured in the film Argo. Good description of the early monotony of spy work and how the agency develops to meet new threats.

Finally reached the re-reading of the final book in Ender's Saga:


Mildly annoying that there are a couple continuity errors from the what I thought were key points in the 3rd book.

Have you watched the movie yet? We keep putting it off due to V loving the book so much she doesn't want to be disappointed...

I thought the movie was a worthwhile watch. Some of it is a bit simplified and changed around but the key bits are still there. They did leave out a whole subplot (which becomes more important for the later books) but it was probably justifiable as it would complicate the movie.

I thought the depth of the tragedy of the story might actually have been better captured in the film than the book.

I'd say better, but it's different. Kicking myself for not reading it before I saw the movie many years ago, but what can you do?

Ending is different, how Bob dies is different, plus without the visual manifestation of Durden that the film has, the tone of the book varies in places to put the emphasis more on the narrator's interactions than it does Durden interacting with him.

I don't know of you are interested in the Holocaust, but House of Dolls of Ka-tzetnik 135633 (it's the name they gave to him in Auschwitz) is also a very good book. It's about joy division, a group of Jewish women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery.

I might give that a look. Primo Levi's The Drowned And The Saved took me a little while to get over, but I think I'm ready for some more holocaust misery.
