He had a day job too.
Remember reading something when he found a book by M. R. James and bunked off work to read it.

Most money is in gigs for people signed to majors who sign contracts that shaft the artists. I imagine Burial and Kode 9 have a deal that's very agreeable to both parties as would most of the labels we all enjoy.
But oh man Street Halo is a tune and a half. Love how it's got a dancey groove while still being buried in solitude and some sort of anxious nervousness.

re: Burials money side of things. We know he sells tonnes of albums, but you can break down the £10 retail (or whatever) to quite a few things. The distro will take their cut (30-60%, depending on who it is) then the label takes their share, with the artist getting the final cut. It also depends if Hyperdub has a publishing deal for Untrue too. In which case, the distro/publisher takes an even bigger cut. Obviously it's speculation, but I remember artists used to get about 15-20% of whatever is left over to the label. So if Hyperdub make £6 from every copy of Untrue they sell (and that is a push), then Burial would get about a quid. Possibly more, since Hyperdub obviously takes care of Burial enough for him to stay with the label.
So by that logic, if he sold 20,000 copies of Untrue (and this is a figure I just made up), then it's possible he made a quid for every album it sells. More with digital, since the digital distros take far less of a cut than their physical counterpart.
You can make money from compilations and the likes, as well as licensing for film/tv. Lots of small money earners that gradually make a pretty decent wage at the end.
But yeah, i'd still be surprised if he doesn't have a day job. London living = expensive as fuck. It's also been 4 years since Untrue and obviously he doesn't play live. It's a travesty that artists as big as Burial might still have to work a day job really, but that's the state of the industry, unfortunately.
I imagine in the near future he'll probably start doing live shows. He's gotten so big now that he will be able to get huge sums of money for playing live, probably at the big festivals. He could just do like Aphex Twin does and charge £20,000 per DJ set, playing a couple of times a year, or when he needs the money.
Or maybe he just doesn't give a fuck about money and lives a simple life. All speculation anyway, but quite fun to think about.

I don't think he can mix so live shows may not be a go.

I doubt it matters. All he needs to do is set a live date, bring his laptop, promise some unreleased tunes and he's got a sellout performance. Just play em from winamp!
And don't dare say you still wouldn't go to see it

Makes me wonder about Boards of Canada more though. They release even less than Burial, don't play live (apart from those two shows they did with Warp back in the late 90s/early 2000's) and are just as reclusive. I imagine they make a shitload in licensing though and I think they did the music for a BMW ad a while back.
MONEY MONEY MONEY!

New album this year, from the looks of things. Though they've said that for the past 2 years now, heh.
Theres a new blank spot on the BOC site in the discography section, if you want to put your tinfoil hats on. My body is definitely ready for new BOC. Just as long as it doesn't sound like the Campfire Shitephace though.

Can't you just accept the tunes you have and let the guy get on with his life instead of tooth picking your way through his finances.

I think Street Halo is an astonishing tune.
I'm looking forward to playing it in my sets.

burial is has collaborated with of teh boards of canada - look for a resurgence in burial material buoyed by his recent interest in collobarting with musicians he repsects.

In his interview with The Wire (which was before the release of Untrue) they stated that after the release of his first album he made enough money to quit his daytime job.
Haha madness.

seriously . stuff like this is clearly why someone wouldn't want to be in the public eye. There's speculation about the specualtors speculation before its even speculated about
