Lot of people had that opinion as Rapture was the first ever song with a rap in it broadcast on MTV. So for many people it was the first time they'd heard rap, with Blondie being the first 'rapper'.

To quote Whodini:
But let me ask you a question:
How long have they been rockin like this?
Well, rapping's always been around
(Well, it says that it's big time now)
Every neighborhood had its own crew
(That meant you against me) and me against you
(They would jam every weekend at the neighborhood center)
And charge a small price for the crowds to enter
(The parties would be packed inside and out)
To see who was best at rockin the house

People who'd never heard a Talking Blues before, I assume?
If Blondie was rapping in the 70s, Chris Bouchillon was rapping in the 20s.

Anyone on High Focus records
Foreign Beggars
Any UK Hip hop going for the boom bap beats with rapping that serves no purpose other than trying to be smart
In fact a lot of UK Hip Hop is relevant to this thread as it's got that "I'm really intelligent but actually never say anything interesting " vibe just with a new era cap instead of a fedora
