ahh okay fair point, but i mean isnt it likely that theres other species of fish living in the same stream too?

and yeah, fuck lionfish. i scuba in the atlantic a fair bit and it really is terrible how much lionfish have decreased the biodiversity across the area over the last 5/6 years

there are situations where poisoning is a perfect technique to manage habitats, good example is great lakes lamprey control & trout streams with too many rainbows

lamprey poison is only used in small amounts so it only affects the lamprey larvae, and streams are poisoned a controlled length, where a poison is poured up top and downstream however many meters is another solution that negates the poison, so the flowing water just replaces itself

only other times are in stocked ponds and things like that where, decimating the entire population & restarting is often the most cost/time effective way to carry out whatever objective you have (& fish poisons like rotenone are really only poisonous to fish so they dont like seep into groundwater or something like that)

many other fish outside the target species may get killed, but you have to weight the costs

i had no idea it was done responsibly like that, i cant really argue with that. at first i was just picturing some dudes haphazardly dumping poison down a stream

that would definitely be bad

(actually in one case some irresponsible ppl lost their jobs b/c they skewed the poison to anti-poison and ended up ruining miles of a blue ribbon trout stream)
