Just bagged, not overly keen on the tune but we'll see if it grows on me. Better to have it than not

I'm wondering why Mala didn't have this cut at Transition or any other vinyl mastering studio and then have them press the records. The quality of GZ's vinyl is very good but the cuts are horrible.
That's interesting... So is this tune unaltered from the mix down?

it's not necessarily a problem with the mixdown - as far as I remember the GZ plant in Czech Republic uses Direct to Metal Mastering [DMM] as opposed to the more common method of cutting to lacquer and then metallizing them to produce metalwork and stampers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_metal_mastering

I could be wrong but I was always under the impression that this method of cutting produces quieter, less bassy records. It is much cheaper though.

Saying copies are limited then just repressing is pretty off. I do wanna bag it though, IF the press is decent.

I didn't really understand it but its fascinating all the same. Don't need to worry about vinyl dying either...

"As at 2009 there are six or seven DMM cutting facilities left in the world - all located in Europe. The USA lost its last DMM cutting facility in 2005 with the demise of New York City based record manufacturer Europadisk LLC. Europadisk's DMM lathe was sold at auction on 20-SEP-05 to the Church of Scientology for US $72,500. This gives CoS two DMM lathes for the purpose of transcribing L. Ron Hubbard's speeches to disc and with the development of their wind-up record player to be entombed in time capsules, this would create a system to commit those speeches to posterity for years to come."

fuck if the tune is limited or not, buy the the tune because you like it, not because you want something that others don't have.

yes, GZ does DMM. However I have lots of other DMM cut records that sound tons of times better. If you're into Hip Hop, check the early Nervous Records catalog, like old Black Moon, Mad Lion singles, they were all cut at Europadisk on a DMM lathe (it even says that in the runout sometimes). I don't know all the technicalities about DMM cutting but I have read you can't cut as deep as on a regular lathe. Anyway, those Europadisk records kill any GZ cut record by half a mile and are cut like half a mile deeper. You might end up with a quieter record but like I said GZ does not alter anything on the source material other maybe filtering out some frequencies that might do some trouble when cutting while pretty much every other mastering house like Transition, Heathmans or what have you does master (post-produce) the recording. Here's what an engineer from GZ wrote about their "mastering": http://www.electrical.com/phpBB3/viewto ... 13&start=0
That Silkie vs. Delphic or La Roux I'm not your toy Nero Remix records were also pressed at GZ but the mastering was done at Transition/Heathmans hence GZ can also process records traditionally. The sound quality of those records kills that Mala record easily.
Ironically for metal/Hardcore records that get ultrabrickwalled for the CD release, those GZ cut records will sometimes give you a superior sounding product. GZ did the 5x12" version of Metallica's last album and people were saying the vinyl sounds superior to the CD since it was not as clipped.
