kind of partial to agreement with this. i like ghost hardware, near dark, homeless and a few others but the rest of his music just doesnt do anything for me. 'moth' is incred but thats mostly four tet from what i can hear. this latest release is bland imo

let the flame begin

who's making similar sounds and who's saying it's better (genuine question not on the attack here)? I can think of Ghostek for similarity and he is sick, but some of the time it sounds like he's trying really hard to sound like Burial, producers may get a similar sound and production value over 5 years later but I don't think anyone can touch Untrue.

I agree, many have tried and all have failed. Ghostek is bland to be honest.

Some have taken parts of his production though and cross-bred them with their own music (clubroot, Old Apparatus, some of the future garage crew remember...)

Well, I listen to a lot of the stuff, so I could say that I could tell apart Ghostek and Sorrow tunes from Burial easily, as they all have their own trademarks if you will, but to other people that don't spend as much time on it, it's fair to say they sound a lot like Burial. People like Ghostek, Sorrow, Volor Flex, Atsubox, Desolate (who I think is Sven Weisemann), Nocow all make tunes that are as good IMO as some of Burial's, and I know conversation has come up on DSF before about how some users here prefer Sorrow, etc. to Burial.

I don't think my man Burial is going to be ignorant to all the people that are influenced by him, and he might wanna change it up a bit, perhaps for that reason. Just a theory. :4:

I hope Burial sticks w/making eps and uses this mixtape format as I have said in my earlier posts. I just think its new and different...although one more full length similar to Untrue or
Burial wouldn't hurt but I dont think a full length will happen for a long time, maybe not at all...

I listen to Sorrow and Ghostek a fair bit and they most definitely have their own sound, but there are a few Ghostek tunes where the drums in particular sound very Burialesque but just not quite as good.

Soundcloud

I know what you mean on sounding better than Burial at times though, this ^ one is just incredible, I would choose this over quite a few Burial tunes for that sort of feeling it gives

Besides Volor Flex, which is a tribute, none of those producers sound like Burial imo. Influenced by Burial, sure; but not clones.
Also, Ghostek is a don. I think I rate him more than Burial actually (at least post-selftitled).

I know man, just saying, to the casual listener, at first listen they might sound like Burial.

Ghostek tunes are a lot moodier than Burial tunes.

listening to this atm. the sections that are just drums & ruff garagey basslines are great. not so keen on the soaring enya-esque sections of strings & the like. wrong side of cheesy for me.

hmmm. just listened to some of the clones. don't understand how u can rate these tunes over the tunes by burial. I know it's a matter of taste, but the percussion, arrangements, sounds, etc. are nowhere nearly as good in a ghostek or sorrow tune IMO.
get a bit annoyed about the obvious rip-off elements. no hate though - ghostek is talented. just think he should exploit it in another way.

To be fair to Ghostek, he does have (as far as I know) 4 other aliases, all make very different music.

For me, Ghostek tunes are really moody stuff. Sorrow tunes are more hard hitting. Atsubox's percussion is on another level. Desolate is more at house tempos. Nocow's sound is overall a bit more raw ( ). Burial's a more well rounded version. They all have their different purposes to me, and I like them all. :w:

Okay, so I just gave this my first listen and I personally find it quite incredible. I find his approach to these tracks to be really interesting and facinating! Rough Sleeper is my favorite on first listen, what an amazing track! It does have different elements to it, but I never felt like I lost the groove of the track, everything flowed together beautifully to me. Truant jumps around a bit more, but I think it sounds great. There were so many small, freakin' killer segments, some of them are damn heavy. The bass on this thing is better than anything he's done in a while I think, so deep! And the last part of Rough Sleeper had me really vibing out, that beat is on point! Repeat :h:

Anybody listen to this with a powerful system yet? I was listening to Rough Sleeper last night and boy... when 3:20 comes, my heart just about stopped. I've never heard tension released in such a way in a song before. Its like a "drop" but its so much more subtle, and made so much more powerful by the fact that the song is relatively euphoric and slow up until that exact point. Sounds like a heart murmur or something. I don't know how to describe it. Just "bubububububububbubum". Wow.

I also noticed something interesting about this Single. It's mastered completely differently than his other tracks. Listening to it on headphones just doesn't give the same effect as his other songs. It sounds more distant and flat. I'm wondering what motivated this. With mastering/spacing like the tracks on Untrue, I find it hard to believe that this was on accident (although there is the possibility that he had no say in the mastering), but with Untrue, listening to the record with headphones gives you a whole other atmospheric layer to the album. Sounds come from every direction, in different cadence, tone, distance, etc. But this release sounds better on a surround sound system to me. The bass engulfs you, the organ flows like milky curtains, the tones ring into your head unobtrusively. I feel like he produced this through a stereo and not with headphones or something. I don't know. Perhaps he's just gotten lazy.

think he just wants it to sound ruff and messy. no fancy sound design, just radio-like
