Swear it's always you that brings this up, and it's always me that has to tell you that basically everybody in the midlands who says "Mom" rather than "Mum". Only person I know who says "Mum" is my Mom, and she's from Portsmouth.

So I was just browsing through a list of number ones to jog my memory of a few crossovers, but got distracted by quite how TERRIBLE 1986 was. This is about the first year I remember number ones from... Reet Petit got played OUT, but this honestly has to constitute some sort of low-quality record:
1986
563 11 Jan Pet Shop Boys West End Girls 2
564 25 Jan A-ha The Sun Always Shines On TV 2
565 08 Feb Billy Ocean When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going 4
566 08 Mar Diana Ross Chain Reaction 3
567 29 Mar Cliff Richard & The Young Ones Living Doll 3
568 19 Apr George Michael A Different Corner 3
569 10 May Falco Rock Me Amadeus 1
570 17 May Spitting Image The Chicken Song 3
571 07 Jun Doctor & The Medics Spirit In The Sky 3
572 28 Jun Wham! The Edge Of Heaven 2
573 12 Jul Madonna Papa Don't Preach 3
574 02 Aug Chris de Burgh The Lady In Red 3
575 23 Aug Boris Gardiner I Want To Wake Up With You 3
576 13 Sep Communards Don't Leave Me This Way 4
577 11 Oct Madonna True Blue 1
578 18 Oct Nick Berry Every Loser Wins 3
579 08 Nov Berlin Take My Breath Away 4
580 06 Dec Europe The Final Countdown 2
581 20 Dec Housemartins Caravan Of Love 1
582 27 Dec Jackie Wilson Reet Petite 4
I mean, West End Girls can stay and The Housemartins are arguably defensible but the rest are truly atrocious. Has there been a worse year for pop music than 1986?
As soon as you get into 1987...
1987
583 24 Jan Steve 'Silk' Hurley Jack Your Body 2
