Bernie Carbo makes him looks soft

No, seriously. Check them out. Both legal too.

was looking into the latter and came across a word i didn't know

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nootropic

:o why have i, the biggest math and science nerd i know, i not heard of these before?
obvious answer: because it's bullshit.

but if you're just trying to get pumped and lose any nerves, you can't go wrong with alcohol and caffeine.

and to alphacat - i call placebo.
Nope. There's definitely an effect for most people. Placebo reports are not this consistent.

yuh, i found plenty of double blind studies that more than convinces me of its efficacy

i used to play shows all the time on lsd. man those were some nights. and since most everyone else was high on either hallucinogens or ecstasy, it worked out really nice because we got kind of a collective high going, so when i would tweak the mix, it would tweak us all in kinda the same way. and in that situation, you're super focused, in the zone, because the music is doing such wonderful things, you'd rather give a leg than fuck it up for everyone or stop it. so i never train-wrecked once, everything was groovy

One's state during production.

Recently I've been sort of, putting out my feelers looking for other people who are into production locally. Who might want to get together and collaborate, or simply discuss things with.

Pickings have been very thin, probably the reason why I never got into it at a younger age cause I wasn't exposed to it by others.

Although, I've met a couple people.

One, whom works with a company and has been getting me gigs as a DJ and all around great guy. Produces some minimal and prog house, about at my level where you understand production and are over the initial GIANT learning curve, but really haven't made anything worth while. yet. 100% straight edge kid.

Another guy, who's been producing for a couple of years, but not very consistently. He has a sound cloud. and he's produced all sorts of things from bro to electronica, and it's decent, not good by any means, but he's put together entire songs that well, i guess serve their purpose.

But here's the thing with him. He pretty much only produces intoxicated. Usually on adderall. And should I say, only. He doesn't really go to sit on DAW unless he's up. But when he's up, it's straight, up all night, getting things done. Fast and done well. But if he's not, he won't be bothered to even think about.

I think this brings up a pretty good discussion. How many producers are really like this? How long can one produce at a time without getting bored, tired, or just tunnel vision into frustration until the next day comes along. But I think it's obvious the use of speed and other drugs, changes that. If one, like this kid i'm talking about, can produce for 6 to 10 hours straight because of drugs, he's obviously getting more done than me and many others. I can usually only produce for 3 hours MAX before just becoming exhausted (and I'm not without a coffee, or energy drink).

How many BIG time producers are like this? Just by the looks of some of these big time producers, makes me wonder. I just feel like the nature of production lends itself to these sorts of things.

Thoughts? Personal experience?

Personal experience: I've sat at my computer on FL for at least 8 hours straight without using any drugs, obviously I got up occasionally for food/drinks etc.

If you're getting bored or exhausted, change what you're doing. If you're designing basses, switch up to melodies or leads. If you're trying to mix and remix a track over and over, close it and open up something new - come back to it later. if all else fails, open up YouTube and maybe just watch some tutorials. Imo theres no point in trying to do one thing for an extended session - it'll obviously just fuck you off.

Is the question on whether people product whilst intoxicated? I'll generally have a nice cup of coffee on the go most times but that's because I like coffee. I generally save the €0.33 energy drinks for a day of xBox action.

Also, adderall =/= speed

My endurance has definitely increased. As in my extremely early production sessions were 45 minutes max and usually end up with me overwhelmed and ticked off. But I just keep coming back. And i'm too the point where I get into it and lose track of time. And only stop when I realize how late it is, or there is something else I need to do. I also only usually produce late at night or early morning. So at night I can go like 3 hours max before I start getting really sleepy and my ears get tired (even with nice studio monitors). Mornings I get this odd burst of creativity that last until i decide it's too nice outside and really don't wanna sit here on a computer.

I do all those things, but there definitely is a point for me where my ears get tired or I just get sleepy/have to go do something else. But like I said, my endurance for this is slowly increasing as the number of complete roadblocks i'm hitting in my workflow are disappearing. Where I can really work on something rather being stuck on a key element.

I mostly drink coffee too, and i also like coffee

But for late night sessions that i'm too tired to get a coffee, I've become fond of Monster Rehabs. Tasted just like green tea, and no nasty energy drink taste. albeit I end up rolling around in bed with cold sweats trying to sleep for an hour though.

Also production got me smoking cigarettes again :|
It's like, if I get at all annoyed or frustrated. I go and have a smoke, think it over, come back and work on something else. And it really helps (or at least my mind tells me it does, so it does). And now I see how many producers smoke cigarettes, no wonder.

Close enough. And it's not just a derail, it's just all sorts of uppers.

Well, point being, I just wonder whether it's detrimental to one's production if they only produce while intoxicated with substances that make them less tiresome and enjoy the sound of what they're making.

A guy who works at the mart down my street moved from the UK (got in some trouble I guess) and he's been producing forever. He's the only one i know that knows jack about true dubstep. I've read all over and know about the origins of dubstep, but this was the only firsthand info i've gotten. And he said when it began in the UK, there was and is a lot of speed and amphetamines on the scene, and "dubstep was all basslines". Which seems perfectly plausible. I remember him saying something about how "then it got taken to cali, where people were using more psychedelics, and now it's evolved into what seems like mush, unless their are drugs involved", dunno about that though haha.

Guess this thread spawned from the thought that, electronic music is based heavily around drugs, many of the worlds best musicians used drugs and died from them as well. I mean, Skrillex looks like a crackhead, and his fans that aren't just into pop music or kids, seem to be into all that.

I actually read an interview recently where the interviewer asked Skrillex something like "so I guess you're living the cocaine lifestyle", and his reply was that he wouldn't be able to fulfill his schedule of constant touring and producing whilst simultaneously taking drugs.

what is Adderral I only ever hear about that on american tv shows or hear it in american songs. I don't think people take it here (could be wrong, i only chill with weed smokers)

if it's a medicine, what are the effects of it recreationally?

Adderall, dexadrine, ritalin are all killa for going deep on a tune. Always take my amphetamines with marijuana as well, keeps me balanced.

Adderal and the other drugs mentioned above are for attention deficit disorder (A.D.D.) and they work exactly as prescribed.

So he's not taking drugs for the very reason a lot of bigger, touring artists are?
