I need an academic reference from my university for my new job.

Apparently I should get one from my personal tutor... I never had one. Reading into it and apparently what marks British universities apart is the level of personal tutoring available. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY. With every second I learn to hate that place more and more, despite being a redbrick (supposed to be good) and paying them a fuckton of money it really was the least engaging thing I've ever been involved with. Spent most of the three years in a seething miserable state and was glad to finally be finished, wanted to clean my hands of the place and never have to be involved with it again.

But just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. Can't very well tell a potential employer how much I despised being there, so now sending off emails to anyone I had some sort of contact with (dissertation supervisor and the one lecturer who seemed to give a shit) for a kind word, but I don't blame them if they dont have many to offer.

That's BS.
You did the time, why would they need an academic reference.
You get some very intelligent students who are piss poor employees.
Some folks suck up better and achieve more.
Some work hard and get no recognition.

Do you get judged on the basis of your knowledge and experience or on the basis of your education and how well you got on with the lecturer?

Word. And it's kind of serious. It's probably the least free "first world" country there is, in part because very few even realize that they're becoming less free. That's how a police state creeps up on you.

And it should never be a competition because the rest of Europe is following in America's path and is AHEAD in some things.

I think we should all be equally worried about whatever restrictions in personal liberties all over the west because all our govs are paying attention to each other.
