My best growly growl yet. It's awesome. I'm proud of it. I can post some info about it if you want.
I like it, what vst and settings?
FM8
Can I get a little more info than that?
There you go...

FM8 Preset:

Envelopes in fm8: (There is no pitch automation, I was playing with it, but then I set envelope to 0.)

Automation and stuff:

Effects: (PHAB PHILTER PROAH)

EQ I'm automating:

Removing unwanted, bad sounding frequencies:

Boosting up area where I removed those frequencies, to make it sound full.

Hope I explained it pretty good.

Thanks :) too bad I don't have FL, I'll still probably be able to get somewhere in the ballpark though

Here's some recreations i did of skrillex and kill the noise a while time ago. Some decent growls in there, though my more recent growls sound even better:

Are you Skrillex?

@edit:
I'm more interested how you made this high pitched sound, than this growl. Tutorials for both would be appreciated.

I like the "tire skid" sound. detuned saws+pitch mod+vibrato?

I think he sampled it?

@edit:
I used everything as you said + some effects like chorus, flanger and got this: (the note playing is F and pitch envelope goes octave higher)

I didn't sample it, i made the screech in massive.

Here's basically what i did with the growl sounds:
SKRILLEX
I made a patch in FM8 which consisted of sine waves and simple waves like that. I modulated the amp of the frequency modulator to create a 'opening and closing mouth'. I assigned the mod wheel to this.
I then put it through ohmicide for some extra dirt.
Next I put it through a WOW filter in vowel mode on band reject. This was like the 'shape of the mouth'
I would modulate the mod wheel and WOW filter cutoff in a similar fashion to get it to growl.

SKRILLEX (Screech)
This was a patch in massive that uses saw waves in formant mode. I changed the pitch envelope of the formant to give it an interesting attack. Then I detuned the fuck out of it. Added a little dimension expander & chorus.

KILL THE NOISE
It's just a patch in massive that uses modern talking. Instead of spectrum mode I used pitch +/- mode or something like that. I modulated Wt.position and intensity appropriately to get the right vowel.

Obviosuly I've decribed it really simply but that was the process. I might make a video tutorial to go into further detail on what I did.

Little something I made using EQ automation. Excuse me if the high end is too harsh i'm working on logitech speakers :corncry:

I only used one bit of automation for the growl, bounced it, then chopped it all up. I think I could give a better example if I recreated a Skrillex song with this sound :6:

So you used the mod wheel to get automation saved? I've thought about doing this, no real reason not to other than that I don't really have a table for consistent access to my midi controller.

Traktion you have the closest Skrillex and KTN basses I've heard yet. Every single Youtube tutorial for those don't have shit on you. If you EQ'd and polished those patches up I'm sure they'd sound crispy as fuck. Awesome work.

mromgwtf - thanks for that. I've started getting some nice sounds using you're settings, and with some more filtering I think it could sound gnarly

I've always been wondering if automating the amp in FM synthesis would be worth doing but never could be bothered trying, I guess this proves it. Nice work man, kudos!

Modulating the amp of modulators is one of the bases of FM synthesis.

Yeah I've figured you could probably get some insane results but I was thinking it might going a bit too far, too time consuming and whatnot to be efficient. I recently bought FM8 though so once I'm done with the stuff I'm working on now and get some spare time I'll probably dig into that.
