Try swapping instruments around but keeping the patterns the same.

The other night I accidentally loaded a kick/snare sample onto my already programmed closed hat pattern. Track suddenly took on a completely different feel :D

Make sure to keep the DJ in mind... say at a 64 or 128 or what have you.. remember you are not only making a build up into another section of your tune but also a possible entry/exit point for the selectors. :)

yea works for a dancefloor dj friendly tune, but for home listening intent chuck that out the window

hmmm tip-o-the-day for the cubase users check out some of the midi effects that sometimes get overlooked like the pattern editor
ie: if doing a break edit heavy piece you can get it set up so your different complete edits are all mapped out midi wise to one key on your keyboard/controller

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE ON THE PLANET

READ THE INFO IN THE STICKIES PEOPLE

not talking smack i did it for the first time like two weeks ago and wow

hey I ended up doing this last night and it helped the flow of things.

depending on how you structure your shit, work on the final section first, the way you plan on ending the tune.

So my tune looks something like:

intro - 16 bars
drop 1 - 32
break 1 - 8
drop 2 - 32
break 2 - 8
drop 3 - 32
outro - 16

So I ended up developing drop 3...and then working backwards, stripping it down sort of thing . After two weeks of beginning and scrapping bits of the tune, I nearly completed this in under 3 hours. Instead of trying to progress and develop, trying to add shit...did the opposite - subtracting, it all came faster.

You can never have too much cowbell

And also, if your going nowhere with a track, go away, take an hour out of listening to music and then come back with a fresh head and ears fully recovered
