It's not the SMANS growl, far from it. But it's a really good growl nonetheless

Yeah, kind of a crappy Subject, but whatever..

I'm not asking this because I want to use this sound in a song, and I know the replies may be pretty shit.. But I've been practicing my sound design today, learning new things here and there..

Then I started trying to make growly patches, and I got some decent results, but I want to try something different.

What I'm looking to try and recreate is the Waaaaah sound from Skrillex's "Needed Change" (I like Skrillex.. Suck one ;] ) .

It's this song; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXb8t5Ray7s

It goes like "Waaaaaaaaaaaah,Waaaaaaaaaaah,WaWaWaWaWaWaWaaaaaaaaah" That sound.

I know there's a million ways to achieve any sound, but anything to get me close? Even if I end up with something different, it could still come out cool!

This is for learning purposes only.. Not trying to be Skrillex xD

using an envelope and wow filter on vowel mode you can get some similar sounds. alternatively you can find your own formants using an eq and putting two peaks where you think the right formants are and then automate those peaks up together.

Alright, thanks for the advice :] I've heard Skrillex even uses EQ to formant his sounds?

I just re-read my original post, I sound like a nooblet.

Any more advice peoples? :)

I know the sound you mean. I think I've got it down.

Check the drop in this:

Soundcloud

Is that what you're after?
Let me know if it is and I'll upload it. :)

Eh, not quite.

Same idea, just not exact! If you listen to the song I referenced you'd see what I mean :P

I still wouldn't mind knowing how you created it though :] (SPOON FEED ME OMNONOM)

:h:

Nah trust me you can make that Skrillex sound with the first bass in my drop. I'll sort it out for you when I get home.

I wonder how long it will be until someone actually figures this out. Many have come close but no one has actually been able to deliver. Loads of people talking shit about the sounds in general but not one actually faithfully recreating one.

true
EDIT: Think about this: if Noisia had never made music, Skrillex would not have stumbled upon the "monster" sounds. :)

why do you, and a lot of other people out there, want to re-create other artists sounds. By all means go ahead. More advantage for me. I make my own sound libraries.

If it is a way of learning how to use a certain DAW, then I guess that's cool. Just kind of a :hand-to-forehead: kind of thing.

After learning how to make other artists sounds, we can incorporate some of the techniques, and make crazy sounds on our own. :)
And btw, it's not like we are trying to recreate this sound 24/7 (that counts for me atleast), so I have plenty of time to make my own sounds too. :W:

not sure if anyone posted this yet but http://www.izotope.com/artists/skrillex.asp

he gives some bits on how he makes his drums but mostly hes just talking about ozone :/

"We found quite a few videos online with people trying to emulate your drum sounds and figure out your production process. Is there anything you'd like to tell them now to make the job a little easier?

Well, I don't want to be mysterious about it or anything. Of course I'm not giving away anything either—part of the fun of being a producer is having your own sound. But for me, the drums are simple. It's all about the three pieces that make a really nice drum sound. You need a nice transient in the beginning, and then the note around the 200-hertz frequency that gives it that boof, and then a tail, which can be anything. I usually start with a 909 and compress it to get the harmonics of that 200-hertz note, and then take maybe one or two really good-sounding locked drum samples that don't conflict with any of the harmonics in the 909. You want to tune it at about 200, and shelve off a lot of that stuff above 200, and then you have this live-sounding hybrid 909. Then you take a clap or a china [sound] and shelve it off super high, and add some reverb to it and then print it as one. Balance it while you print it, and then you re-compress it from there and you have a snare drum.

There's one thing about audio too. I think the biggest piece of advice I can give anybody about audio is don't pretend to be a snob. Know what you know, and be ready to admit that there are things you don't know. It's okay to know that something sounds good, but don't convince yourself that things are good when they're not."

This isnt really about skrillex noises, but i notice he uses his basses like a progressing melody while others like audiak, megalodon, coffi (to name a few) kinda just throw gritty bass patterns.
