I'm really thinking about getting Logic and seeing what I can do with that, but lately I've been expanding my knowledge of GarageBand. You definitely have to improvise to get some good sounds.

I was experimenting with some new bass sounds in GarageBand on this track..

I used Garageband for a very long time, and learned it inside and out. It's a decent program for what it is, especially when you get some plugins. There's a lot of stuff that you can do with it that people don't know about. That being said, I wish I had switched to another DAW sooner. I would suggest Logic if you can afford it, it's not a huge transition from Garageband (well it is, but the basic workflow is similar enough to pick it up). If not, there's a lot of other DAWs that are much cheaper that others have already reccomended. Reaper seems to be a favorite. I'm sure you could get going in no time with some youtube tutorials and google searches. However, if you really want to continue using Garageband, get some plugins. Theres tons and tons of free plugins that are excellent, TAL, MDA, Smartelectronix, Audiodamage, and Meldaproduction are just a few. There's also soundfonts, which can be used through DLSMusicDevice in Garageband. I would suggest playing around with some of those, because Garageband's synths don't have may options. i never used any of the factory instruments when I was using it. But do yourself a favor, and save up for a better DAW. You will be glad you did.

You definitely want to check out Ham VST - you pretty much just queue it up on a track and it'll create some amazingly authentic, filthy dubstep beats and sounds. Most the biggest producers use it - including flux, cookie monster.etc.

man, stop it lol. Ham VST sucks. I don't know much about garageband but if it has a synthesizer, get your hands on it and get tweakin.
