Ok I use a different technique.. I've learned a lot of things from prods like Riskotheque, I split my basslines by following a mid-range sound with a pure sine signal - separate synths/sounds.

You guys are saying that you get one sound from a synth, get is sounding massive including sub frequencies then split that sound three ways. Doesn't this mean the sub frequencies are running through the same signal path as the original distorted sound you're getting from the softsynth but you're then splitting it afterward. Is this bad practice? I thought you want you sub to be as clean as possible?

Also i use a Virus TI - as people prob know the LFO automation on the virus is poor as. Are there a lot of people using LFO automation plgins on top of a straight distorted sound to get there wobble etc? If so can anyone recommend a good one?

I've managed to get most of the sounds i want through the virus and kontakt but its fukin long winded and involves rendering the virus with different lfo modulations and splicing the audio together - long.

Soz big post..

Not quite. Keep in mind that you do not need to use the synth's built-in distortion.etc. to get what you want. For example, when creating basslines, I usually try and get a decent combination of saw, sine, and square/pulse waves running. I get that as best as I can with LFOs, ASDR envelopes, resonance automation and a whole stack of other stuff but no FX. I then EQ split this across 2 or more channels (usually 3 or 4), and on each of those I do what I want. However, I'm starting to have the sub separate altogether, simply because sometimes I just want a plain' ol sine sub :)

Also - I thought you could use the virus to filter incoming signals? I would be doing the distortion after exporting the original sound, not before hand.

I'm gonna go ahead and revive this topic real quick :P

I was wondering if there was a sort of 'sweet spot' to set the levels of the low/mid/high. like what are the best hz to set each to? since I only have Logic Express rather than Logic Pro I don't believe it came with the Multiband Compressor so I've just resorted to putting the LowPass plugin for the low end and the HiPass for the mid/high. it gets the job done, but it's just not where I would like it. my lows are currently set to 120hz, mid's at 1200hz, and hi's are 3100hz. if those are bad please cut me some slack  I'm new to this.

I would very much appreciate it if anyone could help me with what hz are best for each of them since, like I said, I'm not too educated on hz and how they're measured and stuff. and if anyone would mind pointing me in the direction of a good multiband compressor vst/au I would be full of giggles.

Thanks in advance :)

Spend 10 mins browsing this very forum and you'd find the answers you're looking for.

nobody will be able to tell you what frequency you should set your filters to. it depends on what sound you are trying to achieve. for example if your sub is just a pure sine you don't need to go higher than maybe 80Hz, if it's a modulated square wave, it might go much higher. just experiment with your settings until you find something that sounds good to YOU. a rough guide to frequencies in dubstep can be found here:
http://ezinearticles.com/?Dubstep-Mixin ... id=3115417
as for the multiband compressor: if you just want to split your bass signal you don't need a compressor you can also use a filter (LP, BP, HP), a free VST is the "Engineer's Filter", really like that one. there's a whole set of free VSTs by "mda" they also have a multiband compressor I think, don't use it much.
http://mda.smartelectronix.com/ there it is ;)

wrong thread matey, there's about 10 gazillions of pages in the "help me make this sound" thread. read/search that one, chances are somebody asked the exact same question before. if you want to avoid "smart ass comments" at least take time to read the rules :t: :t:

using filters to split bands will cause phasing when they are brought together again

is that with all filters? because said engineers filter has a shitload of filtering algorithms (none of which i know anything about) :corntard:

Yeah, unless you'd use infinite db HP/LP filters, most common are 12db, 18db and 24db tho. This means that the filter does not block everything below (HP) or above (LP) the cutoff. I means it has a slope of 'x amount' db per octave. So the part your filtering out, is still there but just quieter and the further the frequencies from the cutoff the quieter it gets.

So for instance, when you low pass your low band at 200hz and hi pass the mid band at 200hz, you'll have some overlapping which will cause phasing

take a look at the engineers filter, you can set it to "elliptic" which will create an (almost) vertical cutoff that goes right down to -108 dB. don't know how that works at all though. maybe you can tell me what's going on with that, it's a free VST, so if you feel like you have too much free time ;) ;)

Cant check it as I use Reason, and to be honest I really don't know THAT much. But I suggest you post post this in the gain structure thread aka moneyshot thread. Macc, who is 1000x more knowlegable will be able to fully answer your question, and even explain it much better than me.

But yeah I think you won't have problems when using that filter, if it really cuts down to -108db. The phasing should be minimal and non audible i guess.

thanks sooo much for your help s3f and Project EX! :W:

I've been making dub (or at least attempting to haha) for a little over a year now and only just recently started to actually make it correctly so I'm just trying to get as much help as I can. all the eq'ing and stuff can just be so overwhelming at first. thanks for the links and tips though, much appreciated!
