Get diggin' them crates!
It's about the samples see, where you get your bass, guitar, keys etc there all on the wax.
Get down to charity shops or car boot sales and buy some cheap vinyl, get sampling and chopping up stuff into little chunks.
This applies to drums just as much as musical phrases, vocal snatches et al.
Experiment and go wild with compression, try different FX chains, side chaining, ducking and whatever else you feel like.
It's all about the 'feel' you have to LISTEN to Hip Hop and lots of music genres. Take bits you like. You'll know when you hear something you like.
It sounds really obvious....because it is that obvious!

ha ha ha, old thread. hip hop is obvious that is the hard thing. kiss and keep it dirty, and just don't loose focus of your main beat, keep that back bone strong.

Depends what kinda hiphop you like...
I like sampled, straigh forward hiphop.
I am not a huge fan of that wonky stuff people are making these days (it just sounds like a gameboy being put through a blender 90% of the time)
Just listening and analyse your favourite tunes and repulcate it, then once you got that down, move onto something original.. same advice i'd give to anyone making dubstep..
Its not that hard working at different BPMs... I mean, my hiphop tunes, house tunes and dubstep tunes all have the same "sound" .. its just knowing how to produce music you like, really!

Hi there,
Good to see some healthy discussion in this thread!
I'll try and throw in my 2 cents.
Firstly as there are some common traits in Hip-hop it is one of the most diverse genres of music around taking influence and inspiration from everything and everyone.
Also 140bpm is the tempo for crunk music (lil Jon etc.) So you might find that it easier to start off listening to alot of that style of Hip-hop.
But as your finding it uncomfortable/wierd to make hip-hop beats outside 140bpm you ever thought about going on a music prodcution course?
At Point Blank we run and online course in Hip-hop which might be of interest to you. Have a look at our in-depth course brouchre:

I wish you all the best in your productions!!!

ha, crossing the line
dubstep is 140, but drums are often halftime, which is slow as fuck. HH from 80 - 110 is much faster by comparison, no?

@JFK
I'm sorry to hear that you class my last post as spam.
I'm simply just offerening an alternative to the other suggestions posted in the thread.
I personally think that some formal learning will benefit every budding producer at some point in their career.
Hopefully you will have a look at our website and upon reading what we offer our students you'll change your mindframe.
Thank You

The rappers I've worked with locally seem to like "grittyness". Meaning they like my tracks that seem a little empty to me and maybe may not be mixed or EQ as well as I usually would. Maybe that's part of the "keep it hood" concept or maybe they just used to crap quality ripped instrumentals...
On a side note Hip Hop needs to be straight to the point and generally speaking uses more real instrument sounds than synths (at least here in the US) I consider the synthy beats to be Rap beats.
