Host yes. MCs no.
If I go to a dubstep/bass party I really really don't want to hear someone MCing for hours - no thanks!

Not essential. A good MC who knows how to work things is OK, but 95% of the time i prefer the music to speak for itself.

i think it always depends on the size of the room. if you have 50 people in a bar, there's no need for an mc or host. if you have hundreds or thousands of people, an mc or host is essential, not only for keeping the momentum going, but also for setting the tone of the party. probably 40% of the people going to see a dubstep night don't keep up with the biggest tunes, or know who the biggest dj's are at the moment, so having the mc/host underline it for those people is really important.

well said! it also should be said that even in the biggest rooms, it's very important that the mc
knows the tunes and
knows when to shut up. nothing ruins music like continuous inane chatter, or my absolute biggest mc pet peeve, talking over vocals.
