everyone thinks they know what hipsters are, but everyone really has their own definition, there is no common denominator
i guess you could say they are "trendy, pretentious people" but not even a term as broad as that would everyone agree on
it's just something people like to say i guess

imo, a hipster is the 'flavor of the month'-esque crew. the ones who will be doing whatever is cool, new, and/or hip next year.
hypothetically speaking, if for some reason dubstep was to heavily decline in popularity in, lets say, the next couple of days, by friday, a hipster would have found a new genre to call his favorite.

its funny tho, cos the word 'Hip' is well uncool... but then you take the uncoolness of the word, and multiply it by vintage clothing, a love of Holga/Lomo-photography, fixed gear bikes and a bizarre sense of neo-punk attitude to things they can reasonably get away with and then you get to it being cool

theres actually a shop in Leeds called 'Hip' which is also quite sick if you have £100 to spend on a jumper, but its perfect for the hipster who wants to splash out on them new hi-top Puma's to go perfectly with their urban outfitters checked shirt/levi jeans to make the big look

fuck it, im almost there

ironic orgy anyone??

'hipsters'? what, like horrid fashion people?

more likely to find them at dull techno and electro house nights surely? at least something you can dance to and still look cool.

dubstep is massive with students init, i suppose quite a few of them could be hipsters.

Everyone on campus considered me a hipster. I told them dubstep, they said hipster. So fuggoff to labelling. If you see a kid at a dubstep night that isn't really into it and he's with a group of people who aren't into it tell 'em all to fuggoff... or stand in the corner so the true headz can do it right.

this

i think until dubstep becomes a staple genre, establishes credibility in a way, then the people who like it will no longer be considered "hipsters"

everyone who listens to something at the height of its popularity is considered a hipster

Try voting on the poll. The first five correct answers receive a prize if I can persuade the Institute to fund it :t:

It's all relative to location. If you're in New York, I don't think dubstep is considered "hip" enough for a hipster. If you're in Kansas, on the other hand, I would imagine anyone with an iPod could be considered a hipster.

That's some sexy-ass photoshopping.

Anyway the term hipster is not widely known. I think hipsters are people who follow every trend, at least that explains
the question in the thread title.

Hipsters have dumb tattoos that make so sense, ride around fixed gear bikes, have beards, listen to thier ipods with the stock ipod headphones, drink PBR and cheap shitty wine, listen to Animal Collective, love to get together to stroke their beards and complain about x y and z. They will get offended if you call them a hipster. And to make things even worse they don't shower that much so they smell like death.

I apologise for posting this in advance.

Sums it up reasonably well...

There are a lot of people like this at nights, but I am slightly guilty of having a moustache and wearing skinny jeans (not paint-on skinny or anything though!).

I'm definitely not a hipster though... :corntard:
