Not everyone with dreads is a hippy so a bit unfair to label all of them as such.

I totally agree with less consumption and at least some stance towards anti-capitalism for the sake of equality and the environment, but I avoid psy-trance parties like the plague as I'm not interested in hearing a load of middle-class dropouts telling me not to consume as much (although they've generally had pretty spoilt upbringings) and then jetting round the world as cultural tourists, making second class citizens of the natives as all local business starts pandering to the westerners, and thinking dancing like an incontinent epileptic and necking gigantic quantities of psychedelics is going to change the "global consciousness".

No-one's fooled. They'll all be accountants in five years. If you really think living without material goods is so great then give them to me you trust fund fucks. Trust me, it's nowhere near as romantic as you might think.

Having said that, big up all the non-hypocritical, non-polluting, trying to do something useful Raindance folks

Thats pretty much what i was gonna say but, really i couldn't be bothered.

@ Rob noble. If you really want to make a genuine change why don't you invest the time you spend preparing for BM on something worth while. Lke charity work or volunteer work for disadvanged people or petition you MP, and whilst your at it get the other 32000 people at BM to do the same. Opting out will never change any thing. I don't really want to flame you or burning man but, what you wrote was at best nieve and idielistic.

The festival itself may be environmentally friendly, but when you consider the amount of ppl who travel to this thing from all over the world, using planes trains and automobiles, it's pretty damn shite for the environment!

personally i think we are parasites and are here on earth to consume, and consume and consume. but thats a completely different kettle of fish..............

Burning Man has a different meaning for everyone. For me its about surviving in the harshest lands in north america with 50,000 other people without the use of money, vending, advertisement, ect.. Its a place to really do some soul searching and to connect with people on a level like i've never experinced before. Its a place to do whatever your heart desires and not be judged, to share your passions and thoughts. Its a place of interactive art, huge sound systems with out anything to reverb off of, food, giving, freedom, learning, ect..

people can call it a "hippy" event or whatever you wanna call it, but i've never seen a more diverse group of people in one area. Its truly a place to be yourself.

btw, burning man was started by a man named larry harvey over 20 yrs ago on a beach. He broke up with his long term girlfriend and burned her shit with a few friends to rid himself of those possessions which started a tradition that now is recognized world wide and is the worlds largest "leave no trace" festival. That means after 50,000 people live there for 1-2 weeks, you wouldn't even be able to find a cigarette butt when we are gone!

(also, dubstep has been the sound of choice out there.)

i understand burning man isn't for everyone, but to say what you said was straight ignorant, unless you believe that people working together to achieve a community based on giving is stupid.

Are you okay with the direction our world is headed, full of greed, unethical corporations, natural resources not being used because of people in power, war, poverty, ect?? I'm not, so I'm apart of the solution, which you call "hippie closed mindedness".
I like to view Burning Man as a social experiment, the way we really should be living. Wouldn't you like to live in a world that encourage people to do what they love and to be whoever you are? A place of self reliant people that don't rely on corporate america to survive.

these are all issues that need to be addressed and solved, unfortunately closed minded people call these "hippie" issues, which are the same people in power that are destroying our planet!

btw, im not a fucking hippie, just someone who cares and won't stand for what our society has become, GREEDY!

now, how can you call these people "simple minded" like you said?? unless your a republican thats only concern is money and power, you should see these points as valid concerns that we all need to work on.

This thread has more than anything made me think about the big chill.

Now, I cant pass judgement on burning man as i know very little about it, but from what ive read it appears to be dead similar to the chill. At first it looks like a hippy fest. Lots of crusties, the same "leave no trace" campaign, soul and body places. Whatever. Point is, after a while you do realise that it is in all honesty only people who wish that they were hippies who seem to go there. Lots of people who will be as hippy as possible for those few days and try and give the impression that theyre waaay out there, before returning to their family and office job for the other 362 days of the year.

But then, after that I pretty much thought who gives a fuck if its full of those people? Even if its not genuine, theyre still nice people for those few days, and that combined with what is in all fairness top draw music and youve got a good weekend! Just got to accept that yeah, music finishes at 11 pm or whenever the fuck it is, as all people know hippies like an early night.

Oh, and whoever that was who said they were part of the solution. How dare you take credit away from people (no way including myself here) who are ACTUALLY putting their life towards making a difference when all you've done is used fuck knows how much fuel travelling from Seattle to Nevada or whatever it is to then use even more powering massive sound systems for you to have a good time to.

I dont mind people going and having a good time at all, hell i wouldnt mind trying it out, but NEVER fucking say its for any reasons more than having a good time.

I went last year with some of my friends who have been going for years. It was fun and weird and not just a hippy fest at all. Best time I have ever had with a case of beer a sneak a toke and a bicycle. Aside from that I was pretty sober. One of the first times I got to hear Skream on a huge system. Freq Nasty was rinsing mad Dubstep a few night I went out dancing too.

Would I go again? I dunno depends. Its not word changing imo. It would be fun to DJ out there tho you can reach a huge audience.
