James Blake is awfully original if u ask me

who knows maybe it's cause i recognize the techniques and how he gets his samples. i def dig his shit a lot, just kinda feels like i've heard it before, prolly cause it's a blend of so many dif genres.

To me James Blake sounds like Jazz (and I hate Jazz, but somehow love JB). It sounds like a classically trained musician who "decided to do it digitally" instead of picking up instruments, and use pitch-shifted vox instead of hiring a woman to sit on his piano and sing...

That's probably why it sounds like so many things, because his approach is purely classical, but the sound is modern.

yea with how many times i've listened to cmyk i def recognize the vox technique used on it and thanks to i forget who i figured out some of the methods beyond pitch shifting using some free plugins that were recommended. the other tracks you can tell is from old rnb, soul, and funk vinyl sampling plus some great use of compression and basic synth sounds and chords. it's def great stuff with just simple sub sine lines

Yeah I got that impression too but I don't think that's what sets him apart, surely there's quite a few classically trained musicians in the edm scene

it was in that free vst thread last week i think, free autotune and voice changer plugin
the techniques i just kinda learned from me working with acapella bits or my own vox. ie: free autotune shit i used a lil on my own vox in tune in sig

I always believed originality came from content, not the techniques used to create that content. In fact, I would say that a large amount of original music is created using very basic techniques. I guess a good example would be...uh, dubstep. I can't say my mind has been blown by the technical ability of Mala, Loefah, Skream, El-B, etc.
