dubstep to me always made me think of much more organic dub/reggae types of music, also more hiphoppy sounding beats, IE Kromestar's Surgery, or Skream's Smiley face. I can just hear any ol' MC over it like Q-Tip or Stamina, or whoever you know?

For the original poster's quote, you should tell that person that if simplicity means lack of production, he is so fucking wrong. Go listen to Boards of Canada, Helios, Aphex, Brian Eno, I mean the list goes on for miles. The beats coming out of dubstep are simplistic yes, but the order of the beat, the samples used, the actual bassline created by each artist is what is still worthy for praise. Its what differentiates between a shitty weak track vs. a funky track thats played over and over.

Yeah, true for all genres. If the music was piss easy to make, someone would have found a way of putting more work in and making it better. And then the game would be raised and it would be hard to make.

my mates who like drum n bass and breaks are warming to it but some initially reacted dismissively or critically of it

the ones who like dub, early jungle etc but are turned off by more recent trends in dance music mostly loved it straight away

just goes to show, in my opinion, that formally underground dance scenes have become pretty conservative

Most music heads I know just don't get it.

I've been playing bits to my ex-boyfriend for months and months and months. He's big into music but he's always been really dismissive of it - boring, just about the bass, nothing new, all that blah blah blah. I just mailed him the plastician clip of 2D.... and he got it! "Next level shit! Loving it!"

You've got to remember that underground scenes may be underground cause they're no good and no-one goes to them.

As long as you stick to a popular underground scene everything should be ok

Went to the "This is dubstep II" dubstep night at the Biouel boat with my sister and her boyfriend, who is totally into drum&bass and even drumcore and hardcore and blablablacore (anything >180bpm).
They had both heard Excision's dark dubstep mix before (played at a reasonably loud level) and were curious to see and hear it "live".
Overall, the reactions I got were quite positive. Some things they said or I noticed are:

• - they liked the 'bigger' tunes more than the dark and minimal ones (e.g. those Pinch played in his set)
  - 4/4 tunes seemed to make them wanna move more than halfstep tunes
  - they said that after a few hours it would have been nice to have some kind of speed-up of the tempo or perhaps finish the night with drum&bass
  - My sister's boyfriend was totally in love with the heavy bass and would have put his head in the speakers if he could.

Although I don't really agree with all of the above points, it was nice to have their feedback, and as I said, all in all they liked it.

that's a really lazy comparison. i'd compare the anything goes vibe to early hip hop, not the sound though. as far as dnb goes..funny, most assume i'm down because i dig dubstep. not true. also funny in my experience that local dnb heads i've talked to assume i think they're gonna be down w/dubstep. also not true. i've had some real negative reactions to the simple question, "what do you think of dubstep?"
