whats your opinion of the exs24 for drums? When I say drums Im meaning using your own hits and setting the thing up from scratch, rather than using drum patches if it has any. I have a friend with logic, I used it a fair bit when doing stuff with him but Ive never actually gone in on the exs or the ultrabeat and tried setting one up with my own samples. He was talking about getting into sampling more, and he definatly needs some help with drums but Im not sure if its worth working out that esx24 or if its more hastle than its worth. He doesnt have any nice ni plugins sadly for his mac.

ot, I was listneing through some of your tracks on the soundcloud the other day, some impressive shit man, that archane track is it? Absolutely horrible. Having heard my own comp entry on soundcloud today and realising how much sc rapes the soundquality of the original mp3 I can imagine how much better it will sound off a plate and a proper rig. Big thumbs up on that one.

I really don't understand people's gripes with the Ultrabeat interface, and then wanting to use audio lanes over the top... This to me sounds like a whole lot more work for somethng that is really very simple.

I use ultrabeat in every single track (only because I don't have battery ), and the fact that you can use it as a sampler or actually create your own drum hits from scratch (seeing as it's also a synthesizer), not to mention it's layout of how you can view your entire drum pattern (not just 1 lane, like in redrum), makes it a no-contest winner for me.

I think for some, if they've started with Reason's ReDrum, Ultrabeat might be a little daunting, but otherwise, it's superior in every single way.

Depone - i use Battery, Audio, ADM, Groove Agent one and Kontakt for drums ( ) - all have their pros and cons.

The best thing about audio is one off manipulation - reverse, Fade envelopes with one click, pitch shift/drops, timestretch, fills (hld down ctrl+D!), one off VST effects (dub delays) on one hits, all a doddle without pissing around with automation.



and that doesnt include the hitpoints menu (slicing, and make grooves from breakbeats etc), audio (other tools), any vst plugin, the realtime menu, or advanced. Its very powerful indeed.

All non destructive too - ive opened up 2 year old projects, and removed an effect, or modified. Slick...

In cubase 5 you can even extract midi from audio parts - fucking sick.

They all have their pros and cons. Cubase is awesome for this as well, ableton sucks (for audio editing, big fan of both atm), but i use battery etc for simple things, adding kicks etc to breaks, hihats, techno.

Dunno how logics audio editing compares.

how do you pitch bend audio ? or is this not possible? or apply fx to just one audio part? or timestretch? i use these things all the time. Might possibly be my noobiness...

ah yea, you cant apply effects to just one part....unless i aint worked it out.

but you can time stretch audio, ableton is famous for its stretching abilities! (well i thought it was)

you can pitch bend audio, you just gotta add some clip automation to the transpose, in the editing window.

being a bit of a beats over synth kinda guy, im loving hearing what you guys think on this subject,

i use logic mainly but have started pissing about in ableton too, for me i normally use audio tracks for each sample (Normally 1 or 2 Kick's layered, 2-3 snares and then assorted hats and cyms) for the soul reason that i can eq each sample in its own way, but from some of your responces its seems that this might not be the best approach (depending on personal preferences)

now im thinking that my normal approach should be a 'first step', ie Each sample in one track each, eq / compress/ effects, ect, then bounce down one or two 'one shot' samples of each and load them into ultrabeat / exs24 for further editing and arrangement, or is this doing to much to a simple process?

Yeah i personally think its overcooking the whole process. Just do what feels comfortable.

^ for me its all about changing it up and keeping my ideas fresh. i try and go into uncomfortable areas and mess around to get my head in a different problem solving mode you know. i prefer working in audio for my drums but im finding Kong very nice, comparable to drum racks in ableton
